This is a list of seasons completed by the Atlanta Flames of the National Hockey League. This list documents the records and playoff results for all eight seasons that the Atlanta Flames have completed in the NHL before their relocation to Calgary, Alberta in 1980. Atlanta would be left without an NHL franchise for 19 years. The Atlanta Thrashers were founded as an expansion team in 1999; however, the Thrashers would subsequently relocate to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2011, becoming the current incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets, again leaving Atlanta without an NHL franchise. List Of Calgary Flames Seasons
The Calgary Flames are a professional ice hockey team based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The team is a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Flames arrived in Calgary in 1980 after transferring from the city of Atlanta, Georgia, where they were known as the Atlanta Flames from their founding in 1972 until relocation. The 2021–22 season is the 41st season of play, and 42nd year in Calgary ( 2004–05 NHL season was not played). It is the 50th year for the Flames franchise, and including the team's time in Atlanta, the Flames have won over 1,800 regular season games, 12th overall in NHL history. Calgary played its first season in the Patrick Division before moving to the Smythe when the NHL realigned along geographic lines in 1981. The 1972–73 Atlanta Flames season was the inaugural season for the Flames' franchise. Offseason NHL Amateur Draft NHL Expansion Draft Regular season When it was first announced that Atlanta would have an NHL franchise many hockey observers thought that a team based in the southern United States was a ludicrous and foolish move, especially since the talent pool had been diluted by repeated expansion and the upstart WHA. Nevertheless, the team quickly began front office operations, naming young St. Louis Blues assistant general manager Cliff Fletcher as general manager. Soon after, Fletcher had found the team its first coach: former Canadiens star forward Bernie "Boom-Boom" Geoffrion. 1975–76 Atlanta Flames Season
The 1975–76 Atlanta Flames season was the fourth season for the franchise. This season would mark a turning point for the franchise. After making the playoffs just once in their first three seasons, the Flames would miss the playoffs only once between 1976 and 1996 (that coming in 1991-92). Patrick Division
The Patrick Division is a former division of the National Hockey League (NHL). It was formed in 1974 as part of the Clarence Campbell Conference. The division moved to the Prince of Wales Conference in 1981. The division existed for 19 seasons until 1993. It was named in honor of Lester Patrick, player and longtime coach of the New York Rangers, who was a developer of ice hockey. It is the forerunner of the original Atlantic Division, which later became the Metropolitan Division in 2013. Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference (french: Conférence de l'Ouest) is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams.
