Western Nebraska Regional Airport
Western Nebraska Regional Airport (William B. Heilig Field) is three miles east of Scottsbluff, in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. The airport is owned by the Airport Authority of Scotts Bluff County and is named after William B. Heilig. Known as "Scottsbluff's Mr. Aviation," he was a World War II United States Army Air Force primary flight instructor, a civil flight instructor, and manager of the city's airport. It sees one passenger airline, subsidized by the Essential Air Service program. In 2016, the airport had 4,262 passenger boardings (enplanements), a 17.15% decrease from the 5,144 enplanements in 2015. Alma, Nebraska
Alma is a city in Harlan County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,133 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harlan County. History Alma was founded in the spring of 1871 by a group of Union Pacific railroad laborers originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming. Harlan County was created by the Nebraska Legislature on June 3, 1871, and Alma was made the county seat on July 3, 1871. A dispute among the original settlers led to a dissolution of the town, but it was re-organized in 1874. Alma's status as county seat was challenged by residents of Orleans, but an 1884 Nebraska Supreme Court decision affirmed Alma's status as seat of Harlan County. Alma officially incorporated in July 1881. The town was named after a daughter of one of the early settlers. On January 13, 1880, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad reached Alma, providing a significant boost for local commerce and industry. Ainsworth Regional Airport
Ainsworth Regional Airport (formerly Ainsworth Municipal Airport) is seven miles northwest of Ainsworth, in Brown County, Nebraska. It is owned by the Ainsworth Airport Authority. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 called it a ''general aviation'' airport. History The airport was built by the United States Army Air Forces between August and November 1942. The site is bordered by farm land on the west and north, Sand Draw on the east, and Highway 20 on the south. Sixty four buildings were built at what would be known as Ainsworth Army Airfield. To construct the base, once land was acquired through condemnation and purchase from seven local landowners, laborers were hired from as far away as Omaha and Sioux City. Two hundred Native Americans from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota came to Ainsworth and were put on the payroll as laborers. A total of 1,200 workers came to build the Airfield. History Ainsworth was platted in 1883 when the railroad was extended to that point. It was named for James E. It is owned and operated by the Omaha Airport Authority, who also owns the main airport of Omaha, Eppley Airfield. Millard, Nebraska
Millard is a former town and current neighborhood in southwest Omaha, Nebraska; the original downtown area (often referred to as 'Old Millard') is near Millard Avenue and L Street. History Millard was laid out in 1870 by Ezra Millard, and named for him. A post office was established in Millard in 1873, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1967. The town was incorporated in 1885. After lengthy legal fights, the town of Millard was annexed by the city of Omaha in 1971. There also were attempts through both the state legislature and the court system to annex Millard into the Omaha Public Schools, but the Millard Public Schools remained an independent unit; although recently they have been included under the Taxing authority of the Learning Community to extend Omaha's tax base.
