"Lions in My Own Garden (Exit Someone)" (rendered "Lions in My Own Garden: Exit Someone" on initial release) is the first single by English pop band Prefab Sprout, released on the band's own Candle Records in 1982. The single was reissued in 1983 after the band were signed by Kitchenware Records. Composition The song was recorded on 25 February 1982 by a three-piece line-up of Prefab Sprout; Paddy McAloon provides vocals and guitar, Martin McAloon plays bass and Michael Salmon provides drums and percussion. McAloon has described this early lineup as sounding like a mix of the Clash and Steely Dan. Wendy Smith joined the band later in 1982. The song utilises simplistic instrumentation – acoustic guitar, bass, drums, harmonica and vibraphone – but the structure is complex, ignoring the conventional verse-chorus pattern. Kitchenware Records was an independent record label based in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, UK. It was founded in 1982 by Keith Armstrong, Paul Ludford and Phil Mitchell, and was originally part of The Soul Kitchen, an artist collective and nightclub. 1980s signings One of the label's early signings were Martin Stephenson and the Daintees, whose single "Roll on Summertime" was voted as ‘single of the week’ in Sounds. Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London, England. It was formed in 1976 by Geoff Travis who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove. Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk rock and early post-punk and indie pop bands such as the Normal and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-operative.
