Lionel D'Ade
Lionel Smythe D'Ade (c. 1875 in Trinidad – unknown) was a West Indian cricketer who toured with the first West Indian touring side to England in 1900. Biography He made his debut in important matches for Trinidad against British Guiana in the 1895-96 Inter-Colonial Tournament. In 1896-97 he played for Trinidad against both Lord Hawke's team and Priestley's side as well as representing the combined West Indies against Priestley's XI. He impressed with 55 against Lord Hawke and then 140* against Priestley, an innings in which he went in at 7-1 and took the score from 148-8 and 178-9 to 284 all out with help from Float Woods and Stephen Rudder. He was described before the 1900 tour as "Not now up to his usual form; steady bat and good field". However he "did little or nothing until the very end of the tour".Wisden, 1901 page xcvii He played just twice in the first ten games scoring only 10 runs. Trinidad
Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the two major islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The island lies off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South America. The West Indian cricket team toured England in the 1900 season. The team played 17 matches between 11 June and 11 August 1900. There had been three tours by teams of English Amateurs to the West Indies in the mid-1890s and the idea of sending a combined West Indies team to England had gradually developed. Several of the leading West Indies players were unavailable and the team that eventually sailed for England was a little weaker than had been anticipated. Despite the fact that it was known that earlier English touring sides had been of very modest standard, the opponents that were arranged for the 1900 tourists were in general of too high a standard, with 12 of the 17 being of first-class standard. Inter-Colonial Tournament
The Inter-Colonial Tournament was the main first class cricket competition in the West Indies held between 1892-93 and 1938-39. Competing teams * Barbados * British Guiana * Trinidad In the early tournaments British Guiana were sometimes referred to as Demerara. For simplicity British Guiana is used in the article. The tournament was restricted to Amateurs. This excluded many of the leading black cricketers who were often Professionals. Origins A tournament between Barbados, British Guiana and Trinidad took place in 1891. Each team played the other, and then there was a final between the leading two teams. During this tournament a suggestion was made by Hon. Aucher Warner that there should be a regular series of matches between the three colonies to be played alternately at each colony. Float Woods
Joseph 'Float' Woods (born about 1872 in Barbados, death details unknown) was a coloured West Indian cricketer best known as a member of the 1900 West Indian tourists to England. He is reckoned to be the first of the coloured West Indian fast bowlers that became a hallmark of West Indian cricket from the 1960s. Apologising for the lack of a photograph, ''Cricket'' in 1900 says "that Woods is a fine specimen of the darkest of the coloured natives of the West Indies, that is to say, he is very dark indeed.
