Linton Hall School is a Catholic coeducational day-school occupying a 120‑acre campus in Bristow, Virginia, in Prince William County about west of Washington, D.C. It is located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arlington. History Early history Linton Hall School (formerly Linton Hall Military School) is located in Bristow, Virginia (Prince William County, Virginia,) on a portion of the 1,700 acres of land originally donated for the education of poor boys and girls by Sarah Elliot Linton (born 1822, died 1891,) who took the name of Sister Baptista upon becoming a Benedictine nun at age 22. Sarah Linton had previously inherited the land from her father, John Tyler Linton, who had died just two months before Sarah's birth. The Benedictine Fathers established St. Maurus Boys' School in 1893; the Benedictine Sisters established St. Edith's Academy for girls in 1894. Bristow is an unincorporated community of Prince William County in Northern Virginia about from Washington, D.C. In 2014, Bristow's postal area population was 29,346, a 287% increase since 2000; however, the Bristow community is formally included in the Linton Hall, Virginia census-designated place (CDP). John Phillips (musician)
John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was the leader of the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas and remains frequently referred to as Papa John Phillips. In addition to writing the majority of the group's compositions, he also wrote "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" in 1967 for former The Journeymen, Journeymen bandmate Scott McKenzie, as well as the oft-covered "Me and My Uncle", which was a favorite in the repertoire of the Grateful Dead. The Mamas & The Papas
The Mamas & the Papas were a folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California, which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. The Mamas & the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the ''Billboard'' top 10, and have sold close to 40 million records worldwide. John Tyler Linton
John Tyler Linton (1796–1821) was a Virginia landowner and philanthropist whose landholdings were donated by his daughter, Sarah Elliott Graham Linton (1822–1901), for the establishment of schools for poor boys and girls in Bristow, Virginia. It is on this land that Linton Hall School (formerly Linton Hall Military School) was established. Linton's Ford Linton's Ford was part of the land owned by a family of English "Cavaliers" (followers of King Charles I of England) who came to Virginia from Scotland just after the English Civil War and settled in Prince William County, Virginia. The family had land holdings in Dumfries as well as Bristow. The property was originally around 740 acres and was owned by Moses Linton, great-great-grandson of Sir Walter de Lyntowho never lived on the property, instead building his home on his property at Marumsco Creek.
