Linnean Medal
The Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London was established in 1888, and is awarded annually to alternately a botanist or a zoologist or (as has been common since 1958) to one of each in the same year. The medal was of gold until 1976, and is for the preceding years often referred to as "the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society", not to be confused with the official Linnean Gold Medal which is seldom awarded. The engraver of the medal was Charles Anderson Ferrier of Dundee, a Fellow of the Linnean Society from 1882. On the obverse of the medal is the head of Linnaeus in profile and the words Carl Linnaeus, "Carolus Linnaeus", on the reverse are the arms of the society and the legend ''"Societas Linnaeana optime merenti"''; an oval space is reserved for the recipient's name.Gage A.T. and Stearn W.T. George Charles Wallich
George Charles Wallich (16 November 1815 – 31 March 1899) was a British medical doctor, marine biologist and professional photographer. He was born in Calcutta where his father, the Danish naturalist Nathaniel Wallich, was Superintendent of the Royal Botanical Gardens. As a Surgeon-Major in the Indian Medical Service, he served 'during the Sutlej and Punjab campaigns, and also during the Santhal rebellion of 1855-56. He retired from the service in 1858.' In 1860 he accompanied Sir Leopold M'Clintock aboard the ''Bulldog'' on a voyage across the North Atlantic to survey the sea-bottom for the laying of the proposed trans-Atlantic cable. Hermann Graf Zu Solms-Laubach
Hermann zu Solms-Laubach, more precisely Hermann Maximilian Carl Ludwig Friedrich Graf zu Solms-Laubach (23 December 1842 in Laubach, Grand Duchy of Hesse – 24 November 1915 in Strasbourg) was a German botanist. Life Count Solms-Laubach studied in Giessen, Berlin, Fribourg and Geneva. In 1868 he obtained habilitation at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. In 1872 he became an associate professor at the University of Strasbourg; in 1879 he was appointed professor and director of the botanical garden in Göttingen, and in 1888 in Strasbourg. From October 1883 to March 1884 he traveled in Java and stayed for 3 months at Buitenzorg (now Bogor, especially in the botanical garden), West Java and made several collections in the vicinity of Cibodas. Georg Ossian Sars

Frederick Orpen Bower
Frederick Orpen Bower FRSE FRS (4 November 1855 – 11 April 1948) was an English botanist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1891. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1909 and the Darwin Medal of the Royal Society in 1938. He was president of the British Association in 1929–1930. Life Bower was born in Ripon in Yorkshire the son of Abraham Bower and Cornelia Morris, sister of the eminent botanist, Francis Orpen Morris. He was educated at Repton School in Derbyshire before studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated MA in 1877. In 1880 he acquired a position as assistant lecturer in botany at University College, London under Thomas Huxley. In 1882 he moved to South Kensington as a full Lecturer in botany. Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing
The Reverend Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing FRS, FLS (6 February 1835, London – 8 July 1926, Royal Tunbridge Wells) was a British zoologist, who described himself as "a serf to natural history, principally employed about Crustacea". Educated in London and Oxford, he only took to natural history in his thirties, having worked as a teacher until then. Although an ordained Anglican priest, Stebbing promoted Darwinism in a number of popular works, and was banned from preaching as a result. His scientific works mostly concerned crustaceans, especially the Amphipoda and Isopoda, the most notable being his work on the amphipods of the ''Challenger'' expedition. Melchior Treub
Melchior Treub (26 December 1851 – 3 October 1910) was a Dutch botanist. He worked at the Bogor Botanical Gardens in Buitenzorg on the island of Java, south of Batavia, Dutch East Indies, gaining renown for his work on tropical flora. He also founded the Bogor Agricultural Institute. He traveled and collected across many areas of Southeast Asia. He was born in Voorschoten, and in 1873 he graduated in biology from the University of Leiden. Subsequently, he remained in Leiden as a botanical assistant. From 1880 to 1909 he was a botanist based in the Dutch East Indies. Alfred Merle Norman (29 August 1831 – 26 October 1918) was an English clergyman and naturalist. Biography Early life Norman was born in Exeter, England in 1831. His father was a landowner, surgeon and Deputy-Lieutenant of Somerset. He studied the molluscs and plants of Somerset at young age. He studied at Winchester College from 1844 to 1848. Eduard Strasburger
Eduard Adolf Strasburger (1 February 1844 – 18 May 1912) was a Polish-German professor and one of the most famous botanists of the 19th century. He discovered mitosis in plants.
