Great Linford is a historic village, district and wider civil parish in the northern part of Milton Keynes, England, between Wolverton and Newport Pagnell. Great Linford village Great Linford was one of the North Buckinghamshire villages incorporated into Milton Keynes at its designation in 1967. History The origin of the name Linford is not recorded. The first reference to Linford occurs in 944, when "King Edmund gave to his thegn Aelfheah, land at Linforda with liberty to leave it to whom he wished"; it appears in the Domesday Book as ''Linforda''. In the early sixteenth century, the rector of this parish Dr Richard Napier was widely known as a medical practitioner, astrologer and curer of souls. Little Linford
Little Linford is a village in the City of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. It is about a mile west of Newport Pagnell, near the M1 motorway. The village is separated from its neighbour and namesake Great Linford (and the rest of the Milton Keynes urban area) by the floodplain of the River Great Ouse. Little Linford was initially a hamlet in the manor and ecclesiastical parish of Linford. The parish church is dedicated to St Leonard. The traditional parish name 'Linford' is an Old English language word that means 'ford where maple trees grow'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was recorded as ''Linforde''. The prefix 'Little' was added to distinguish it from Great Linford. Civil parish Little Linford is in the civil parish of "Haversham-cum-Little Linford", which also includes the nearby village of Haversham. Newtown Linford
Newtown Linford is a linear village in Leicestershire, England. The population of the civil parish was 1,000 at the 2001 census, including Ulverscroft, increasing to 1,103 at the 2011 census. The village lies in a valley in the Charnwood Forest area, and has four access roads. The first is from Anstey, then there are roads which lead to the A50 at Groby and at Markfield (the former passing Groby Pool). Another road that leads north towards Ulverscroft, or Loughborough, Woodhouse, Woodhouse Eaves, Swithland etc. History The village's name originates from the relocation of people when the Ferrers family of Groby turned Bradgate into a deer park. Linford Cicero Christie (born 2 April 1960) is a Jamaican-born British former sprinter. He is the only British man to have won gold medals in the 100 metres at all four major competitions open to British athletes: the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games. He was the first European athlete to break the 10-second barrier in the 100 m and still holds the British record in the event. He is a former world indoor record holder over 200 metres, and a former European record holder in the 60 metres, 100 m and 4 × 100 metres relay. He remains one of the most highly decorated British athletes of all-time. By the end of his track career Christie had won 24 medals overall, more than any other British male athlete before or since. Herbert Linford Gwyer
The Rt Rev Herbert Linford Gwyer was the second Bishop of George, and a survivor of the sinking of . He was educated at Uppingham and Magdalene College, Cambridge. After a period of study at Westcott House, Cambridge he was ordained in 1906 and he began his career with a curacy in Kirkburton after which he was a missionary in Qu'Appelle. A World War I Chaplain to the Forces, he was later Vicar of Christ Church, Staincliffe and St Johns, Wakefield before his elevation to the episcopate.
