Lina Galtieri
Angela (Lina) Barbaro-Galtieri (born 1934) is a retired Italian and American particle physicist. Working at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, she assisted Luis Walter Alvarez in his Nobel Prize winning research using a bubble chamber to discover new particles, and she later participated in the discovery of the top quark. Education and career Galtieri was born on October 23, 1934 in Palmi, Calabria. She studied in the Marconi Institute of Physics at Sapienza University of Rome, completing her doctorate there in 1957. After working as an assistant at Sapienza University, she moved to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1961. She co-directed the Particle Data Group from 1963 to 1974. In 1994, she became head of the lab's CDF Project, associated with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. She retired in 2005. Particle physics or high energy physics is the study of fundamental particles and forces that constitute matter and radiation. The fundamental particles in the universe are classified in the Standard Model as fermions (matter particles) and bosons (force-carrying particles). There are three generations of fermions, but ordinary matter is made only from the first fermion generation. The first generation consists of up and down quarks which form protons and neutrons, and electrons and electron neutrinos. The three fundamental interactions known to be mediated by bosons are electromagnetism, the weak interaction, and the strong interaction. Quarks cannot exist on their own but form hadrons. Hadrons that contain an odd number of quarks are called baryons and those that contain an even number are called mesons. Mount Everest (; Tibetan: ''Chomolungma'' ; ) is Earth's highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. Bay To Breakers
Bay to Breakers is an annual footrace in San Francisco, California typically on the third Sunday of May. The phrase "Bay to Breakers" reflects the fact that the race starts at the northeast end of the downtown area a few blocks from The Embarcadero (adjacent to San Francisco Bay) and runs west through the city to finish at the Great Highway (adjacent to the Pacific coast, where breakers crash onto Ocean Beach). The complete course is long. Bay to Breakers is well known for many participants wearing costumes. The 1986 edition set a Guinness Word Record for being world's largest footrace with 110,000 participants, until that was surpassed by the 2010 City2Surf event in Sydney. Mont Blanc (french: Mont Blanc ; it, Monte Bianco , both meaning "white mountain") is the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe, rising above sea level.
