Lim Hak Tai
Lim Hak Tai, (; 28 May 1893 – 14 February 1963) was one of Singapore's pioneer artist at the turn of the 20th century, and was the person who inspired the Nanyang School of art form, to reflect the ' Nanyang' (South-east Asia) region, both in painting style and subject matter. Early life and education Lim was born on 28 May 1893 in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. Lim left Xiamen in 1913 to study at Fuzhou, Fujian and graduated from the Fujian Provincial Teachers’ Training College in 1916. Career After graduation, Lim returned to Xiamen and taught at various schools. In 1923, Lim co-founded the Xiamen Academy of Fine Arts with two other artists. The Chinese High School
The Chinese High School () was an independent school in Singapore offering secondary education. The school merged with Hwa Chong Junior College on 1 January 2005 to form the integrated Hwa Chong Institution. Founded on 21 March 1919, The Chinese High School was the first high school in Southeast Asia to cater to different dialect groups among overseas Chinese in the region. After Singapore gained independence in 1965, the school came under the purview of the Ministry of Education (Singapore), Ministry of Education and was accorded the Special Assistance Plan (SAP) status in 1979. Georgette Chen
Georgette Liying Chendana Chen (; Born Chang Li Ying; 23 October 1906 – 15 March 1993), most commonly known as Georgette Chen, was a Singaporean painter and one of the pioneers of Modernism, modern Visual art of Singapore, Singaporean art as well as the Nanyang Style, Nanyang style of art in the region. A key figure in the development of modern art in Singapore, Chen is known for her oil paintings and contributions to Visual arts education, art education as a teacher at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) from 1954 to 1981. Prior to being based in Federation of Malaya, Malaya and Singapore from the 1950s onwards, Chen often travelled between cities such as Shanghai, Paris, New York City, New York and Tokyo. Liu Kang (artist)
Liu Kang () was a Singaporean artist known for his Balinese-themed figurative paintings. He was a founding member of the Singapore Art Society, and was credited with developing the Nanyang Style, an art style associated with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Biography Liu was born in Fujian Province and he spent his early years in British Malaya, studied art in Shanghai and Paris, and taught art in Shanghai during the 1930s. Under the influence of Chinese artist and art teacher Liu Haisu (1896–1994), Liu admired, and often appropriated the styles of French-based modernist painters such as Cézanne, van Gogh and Matisse. Liu moved to Singapore in 1942 and had been credited with numerous contributions to the local arts scene. Chen Chong Swee
Chen Chong Swee () was a Singaporean watercolourist belonging to the pioneer generation of artists espousing the Nanyang-styled painting unique to Singapore, at the turn of the 20th century. He was also one of the first artists in Singapore to use Chinese ink painting techniques to render scenery and figurative paintings of local and Southeast Asian themes. Born in Swatow, Chen attended school at the Union High School in Swatow, China and graduated in 1929. He attended and graduated from Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in 1931, and arrived in Singapore that same year. He taught art at various secondary schools, before becoming a lecturer of the Chinese ink painting department at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
