Lillie Pierce Voss
Lillie Pierce Voss (15 August 1876 – 14 September 1967) was an early South Florida pioneer, inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women in 2012/13. Early life and family Lillie Pierce Voss was born Lillie Elder Pierce on August 15, 1876, at United States House of Refuge No. 3 in Dade County, modern-day Delray Beach in Palm Beach County.Voss was the first white child to have ever been born between Jupiter, Florida and Miami, Florida, a geographic area that today has nearly 6 million inhabitants. A National Register of Historic Places marker, erected in the 1970s, sits upon the location of her birth, along State Road A1A at the Delray Beach public beach. Delray Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population of Delray Beach as of April 1, 2020 was 66,846 according to the 2020 United States Census. Located 52 miles (83 kilometers) north of Miami, Delray Beach is in the Miami metropolitan area. History Early years The earliest known human inhabitants of what is now Delray Beach were the Jaega people. Tequesta Indians likely passed through or inhabited the area at various times. Palm Beach, Florida
Palm Beach is an incorporated town in Palm Beach County, Florida. Located on a barrier island in east-central Palm Beach County, the town is separated from several nearby cities including West Palm Beach and Lake Worth Beach by the Intracoastal Waterway to its west, though Palm Beach borders a small section of the latter and South Palm Beach at its southern boundaries. As of the 2020 census, Palm Beach had a year-round population of 9,245, an increase from 8,348 people in the 2010 census. Further, around 25,000 people reside in the town between November and April. The Jaega arrived on the modern-day island of Palm Beach approximately 3,000 years ago. Later, white settlers reached the area as early as 1872, and opened a post office about five years later. Hypoluxo is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,588 at the 2010 census. As of 2018, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 2,783. Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area is a protected landscape. Etymology The origin of the name "Hypoluxo" is disputed. One theory analyzed the name as composed of the Greek root ''"hypo-"'' (under, below average) and the Latin ''"lux"'' (light). Hannibel Pierce settled on Hypoluxo Island with his family in 1873. His son, Charlie W. Pierce reported that a Seminole woman told his mother that the Seminole name for Lake Worth was ''Hypoluxo'', which he thought meant 'island', or as he put it using his marginal command of the English language: "water all around, no get out". He was born in Port Huron, Michigan, the son of Granville Boynton and Frances (Rendt) Boynton. Boynton was educated in Waukegan, Illinois, and briefly attended medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he married Anna Fidelei. Together they had five children. After his service in the Civil War, Boynton returned to Port Huron where he served in many capacities, including postmaster, newspaper publisher and mayor.
