Károly Makk
Károly Makk (December 22, 1925 – August 30, 2017) was a Hungarian film director and screenwriter. Five of his films were nominated for the ''Palme d'Or'' at the Cannes Film Festival; however, he won lesser awards at Cannes and elsewhere. He was born in Berettyóújfalu, Hungary. In 1973 he was a member of the jury at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival. In 1980, he was a member of the jury at the 30th Berlin International Film Festival. His film ''A Long Weekend in Pest and Buda'' (2003) was entered into the 25th Moscow International Film Festival. From September 27, 2011, he was the president of the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Arts. Imre Soós
Imre Soós (12 February 1930 – 20 June 1957) was a Hungarian actor, mostly known for his roles in communist propaganda films during the 1950s. He played the leading role in the 1956 film '' Körhinta''. Career Early years Imre Soós was born on 12 February 1930, in Balmazújváros, as the eighth child of a peasant family living in great poverty. Like every member of his family, some of which were illiterate, his time was mostly consumed working in the fields, until he tried his luck by presenting himself to a travelling casting team in 1948. Fuelled by their praise, and the growing want to travel, he went to Budapest to enter the Academy of Drama, where he was admitted after the first hearing. Éva Ruttkai (31 December 1927 – 27 September 1986) was a Hungarian actress, well known from her work on stage, cinema, and television productions. She was the wife of Miklós Gábor, and later Zoltán Latinovits. Life Éva Ruttkai (born Éva Russ) was born on 31 December 1927, in Budapest, as the sixth child (though only she, and her brothers Iván and Ottó reached adulthood). The family had hard time to make a living. The two brothers already worked as child actors, with Ruttkai following them from age 2. Marianne Krencsey (9 July 1931 – 30 March 2016) was a Hungarian stage, film and television actress. Life and career Born in Rákoscsaba, Krencsey graduated as a theater director, but she was eventually mainly active as an actress thanks to her breakthrough performance in the 1954 Károly Makk's drama film ''Liliomfi''. Also active on stage and on television, in 1966 she married her second husband, moving to the United States and basically retiring from acting. In 2008 Krencsey received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic. 1955 Cannes Film Festival
The 8th Cannes Film Festival was held from 26 April to 10 May 1955. The Golden Palm went to the US film '' Marty'' by Delbert Mann. The festival opened with '' Du rififi chez les hommes'' by Jules Dassin and closed with ''Carmen Jones'' by Otto Preminger. Until the 1954 Festival, the whimsical way various prizes were being awarded had drawn much criticism. In answer to this, from 1955 onwards, the Jury was composed of foreign celebrities from the film industry. In 1955, the first Palme d'Or was awarded, as the highest prize of the Festival. Mafilm
Mafilm was established in 1948. It has been the largest and most significant film studio in Hungary and a strategic base for the Hungarian film industry. Mafilm's history has lived days of glory, just as it has survived severe deaths. The roots of its birth go back to Kolozsvár, and his ancestors included Europe's third-largest silent film factory. Ever since Korda Sándor (original Hungarian name, later Alexander Korda) founded the predecessor of Mafilm, film production has been going on here without stopping. Iván Darvas
Iván Darvas (born ''Szilárd Darvas''; 14 June 1925 in Behynce ( hu, Beje, german: Behintz; now part of Tornaľa, Revúca District, Banská Bystrica Region) – 3 June 2007 in Budapest, Hungary) was a Hungarian actor. Early life Born as Szilárd Darvas, his father was János Darvas, and his mother, Antonina Evdokimova, was Russian. He spent his childhood in Prague, where his father worked as a journalist. He went to a German-language school, so he spoke Hungarian, Russian and German well. At home they spoke Hungarian, which he thought, was a secret language they understood only. He came to Hungary in 1939. In 1945 he worked as a military interpreter for the soviet military. In 1946 Darvas was employed in Actors' Theatre (Művész Szinház) by Zoltán Várkonyi, and he worked there until 1949.
