Lilburn (Ellicott City, Maryland)
Lilburn Mansion, also known as the Balderstones Mansion or Hazeldene is a historic home located in Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland. The site of the structure is on an original 2,500-acre land grant named the Valley of Owen. The gothic revival mansion was built on College avenue for Baltimore foundry owner Henry Richard Hazlehurst in 1857. The house has architectural features that included a bell tower and solarium. A 1923 fire destroyed the front parlor and interior. The original 20 acres site has been subdivided down to 8 acres with the guesthouse and carport outbuildings demolished. In later years, the mansion has been popularized by haunted house storytellers. Douglas Lilburn
Douglas Gordon Lilburn (2 November 19156 June 2001) was a New Zealand composer. Early life Lilburn was born in Whanganui and spent his early years on the family sheep farm in the upper Turakina River valley at Drysdale. He attended Waitaki Boys' High School from 1930 to 1933, before moving to Christchurch to study journalism and music over the next three years at Canterbury University College, then part of the University of New Zealand. In 1936 his career in music was set when his tone poem ''Forest'' won visiting composer Percy Grainger's national composition competition. In 1937 he began studying at the Royal College of Music in London, tutored in composition by Ralph Vaughan Williams until 1939. The two men remained close: in later years Lilburn sent Vaughan Williams gifts of New Zealand honey, knowing that the older man was fond of it. Tim Lilburn (born 27 June 1950) is a Canadian poet and essayist. Lilburn was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He obtained a B.A. from the University of Regina, a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Gonzaga University, and his PhD from McMaster University. He is the author of several critically acclaimed collections of poetry, including ''Kill-site'', ''To the River'', ''Moosewood Sandhills'' and his latest work ''Going Home''. Successful even in the early stages of his career, Lilburn's second work, ''Tourist To Ecstasy'', was shortlisted for the Governor's General's Award but did not win. Lilburn's first glimpse of national approval came in 1995, upon receiving the Canadian Authors Association Award for his work on ''Moosewood Sandhills''. Lilburn Williams Boggs (December 14, 1796March 14, 1860) was the sixth Governor of Missouri from 1836 to 1840. He is now most widely remembered for his interactions with Joseph Smith and Porter Rockwell, and Missouri Executive Order 44, known by Mormons as the "Extermination Order", issued in response to the ongoing conflict between church members and other settlers of Missouri. Boggs was also a key player in the Honey War of 1837. Early life Lilburn W. Boggs was born in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky on December 14, 1796, to John McKinley Boggs and Martha Oliver. Lilburn Cottages are a group of historic cottages part of Liburn Mansion, located in Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland. The cottages were built on an original 2,500-acre land grant named the Valley of Owen. The Gothic Revival Lilburn Mansion was built on College Avenue for Baltimore foundry owner Henry Richard Hazlehurst in 1857. The original 20-acre site has been subdivided down to 8 acres, and the guesthouse and carport outbuildings demolished. The site of the cottages was subdivided into a 6.75-acre parcel, which allowed the portion of the historic Lilburn complex to fall outside of the Ellicott City Historic district development protections. In 2013, owners Ronald and Gail Spahn allowed the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services to burn the historic structures, including the adjacent Lilburn (Hammond) Cottage and Grimes house, before subdividing the property. Lilburn Tower is a privately owned 19th-century mansion house at Lilburn, near Wooler, Northumberland. The property is a Grade II* listed building and forms part of the Lilburn Estate. A number of discrete buildings and monuments are scattered across the grange, including the Hurlestone, Hurlestone Tower and an astronomical observatory. The ancient manors of East and West Lilburn were united when both were purchased separately by John Clennell of the Clennel family of Clennell Hall about 1700. The ruinous remains of the old 15th-century manor house, known as West Lilburn Tower, which incorporated a pele tower, are scheduled as an Ancient Monument and protected by Grade II listed building status.
