Lighthorse Harry Lee Cabin
"Lighthorse Harry" Lee Cabin, also known as Lee Cabin, is a historic home located in Lost River State Park, near Mathias, Hardy County, West Virginia. It was built about 1800, and is a two-story, frame and hewn-log structure. It was built by Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III (1756-1818) as a summer retreat from the heat of their eastern Virginia home. The property remained in the Lee family until 1879. The State of West Virginia acquired it in the 1930s as a portion of Lost River State Park and the state operates it as a museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Mathias, West Virginia
Mathias is an unincorporated community along the Lost River in Hardy County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Mathias lies off West Virginia Route 259. Before the consolidated school of East Hardy High School at Baker, Mathias had its own educational facility, Mathias School, which served grades kindergarten through twelfth. Mathias has one bank (Summit Community Bank), one restaurant, a post office, a new garage, one community center, one gas station, as well as Lost River State Park. Lost River State Park
Lost River State Park is a state park located in Hardy County, West Virginia near the community of Mathias. The park encompasses managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Despite the name of the park, it does not abut the Lost River; it lies about west of the river. The park features a selection of twenty-six vacation cabins. It also provides hiking trails, horses, a swimming pool, and other sports facilities that include tennis, badminton, volleyball, and archery. Lost River State Park includes the historic Lighthorse Harry Lee Cabin (c. 1800), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is located near the site of the 1756 Battle of the Trough, a skirmish between Virginia militia and a band of French and Indian warriors, during the French and Indian War. Hardy County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,299. Its county seat is Moorefield. The county was created from Hampshire County in 1786 and named for Samuel Hardy, a distinguished Virginian. History The first European known to visit this area was John Van Meter in 1725. The earliest permanent European settlements were established in the 1730s. Hardy County was formed in 1786 from Hampshire County in Virginia. It was one of fifty counties admitted to the Union as the state of West Virginia in 1863. Henry Lee III (January 29, 1756 – March 25, 1818) was an early American Patriot (American Revolution), Patriot and U.S. politician who served as the ninth Governor of Virginia and as the Virginia United States House of Representatives, Representative to the United States Congress.
