Lightbend, formerly known as Typesafe, is a company founded by Martin Odersky, the creator of the Scala (programming language), Scala programming language, Jonas Bonér, the creator of the Akka (toolkit), Akka middleware, and Paul Phillips (poker player), Paul Phillips in 2011. Akka (toolkit)
Akka is a source-available toolkit and runtime simplifying the construction of concurrent and distributed applications on the JVM. Scala (programming Language)
Scala ( ) is a strong statically typed general-purpose programming language that supports both object-oriented programming and functional programming. Designed to be concise, many of Scala's design decisions are aimed to address criticisms of Java. Scala source code can be compiled to Java bytecode and run on a Java virtual machine (JVM). Scala can also be compiled to JavaScript to run in a browser, or directly to a native executable. Reactive Streams is an initiative to provide a standard for asynchronous stream processing with non-blocking back pressure. __TOC__ Origin Reactive Streams started as an initiative in late 2013 between engineers at Netflix, Pivotal and Lightbend. Some of the earliest discussions began in 2013 between the Play and Akka teams at Lightbend. Lightbend is one of the main contributors of Reactive Streams. Paul Phillips (poker Player)
Paul Phillips (born August 9, 1972 in San Francisco, California) is an American software developer, entrepreneur and poker player. Programming Phillips wrote the Boa (web server), Boa web server while attending the University of California, San Diego, but no longer maintains it. In 1994, one of his colleagues at college discovered he had an interest in blackjack and subsequently introduced him to poker. In 1996, he became Chief Technical Officer for Go2Net. This success is the basis of his nickname Dot-com company, Dot-com. Phillips subsequently started working on the Scala (programming language), Scala compiler and standard library. Martin Odersky
Martin Odersky (born 5 September 1958) is a German computer scientist and professor of programming methods at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. He specializes in code analysis and programming languages. He designed with help from others the Scala programming language and Generic Java (and Pizza before). In 1989, he received his Ph.D. from ETH Zurich under the supervision of Niklaus Wirth, who is best known as the designer of several programming languages, including Pascal. He did postdoctoral work at IBM and Yale University. In 1997, he implemented the GJ compiler, and his implementation became the basis of javac, the Java compiler.
