"Light of the World" is a song by English singer-songwriter Kim Appleby, released in July 1993 by Parlophone as the first single from the singer's second solo album, '' Breakaway'' (1993). Appleby co-wrote the song with her producers Neal Slateford and Neil Davidge. It reached number 41 on the UK Singles Chart in July 1993, but was more successful on the UK Dance Singles Chart, peaking at number 15. Additionally, it charted in Germany (58), spending a total of 7 weeks on the German singles chart, and in Australia (137). Its black-and-white music video was directed by Tim Royes and Russell Young, and released on 19 July 1993. The video was shot on 35mm and made as a stylish close-up performance film. Kim Appleby
Kim Loraine Appleby (born 28 August 1961) is an English singer, songwriter, and actress. She participated in the duo Mel and Kim, with her sister Melanie Appleby, until her sister's death from pneumonia following treatment for cancer. Solo music career Kim released her first solo album ''Kim Appleby'', in November 1990. The album included songs co-written with Mel for what was intended to be the next "Mel and Kim" album, alongside other songs that Kim had composed following Mel's death. One of these songs, "Don't Worry", was selected as the first single, and reached number two in the British charts in November 1990, as well as being a hit in Europe. Hi-NRG (pronounced "high energy") is a genre of uptempo disco or electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in the United States during the late 1970s and early 1980s. As a music genre, typified by fast tempo, staccato hi-hat rhythms (and the four-on-the-floor pattern), reverberated "intense" vocals and "pulsating" octave basslines, it was particularly influential on the disco scene. Its earliest association was with Italo disco. Characteristics Whether hi-NRG is more rock-oriented than standard disco music is a matter of opinion. ''Record Mirror'' was a British weekly music newspaper between 1954 and 1991 for pop fans and record collectors. Launched two years after the ''NME'', it never attained the circulation of its rival. The first UK album chart was published in ''Record Mirror'' in 1956, and during the 1980s it was the only consumer music paper to carry the official UK singles and UK albums charts used by the BBC for Radio 1 and ''Top of the Pops'', as well as the US ''Billboard'' charts. James Hamilton (25 December 1942 – 17 June 1996) was a British DJ and dance music columnist for ''Record Mirror'', and later for ''Music Week'', where he worked until his death in 1996. He is recognised as a pioneering advocate of disco mixing in the UK and the addition of beats per minute (bpm) calculations to record reviews. Hamilton started as a DJ in his early 20s, playing rhythm & blues in a nightclubs in London. He then headed to New York to work for Seltaeb, the US company who’d acquired the merchandising rights for The Beatles, becoming a talent scout for their newly formed music division. After returning to the UK, he adopted the DJ name Doctor Soul, and also compiled an album with this title for Sue Records.
