Ligat Ha'Al (handball)
Ligat Ha'Al (Hebrew: ליגת העל בכדוריד) is the top Israeli professional handball league. The league is sponsored by Winner Corporation since 2010 and known also as Ligat Winner. Founded in 1954, the league currently consists of 12 teams and managed by the Israel Handball Association. Maccabi Rehovot was the first team to win the championship, while Hapoel Rishon Lezion is most successful club with 18 titles over the years. The league games are broadcast by Sport 5 channel. History The league was established in 1954–55 with 10 teams competing in a double round-robin tournament, and with Maccabi Rehovot winning the first three championships. The Israeli Premier League ( he, ליגת העל, ''Ligat Ha`Al'', ), is a professional association football league which operates as the highest division of the Israeli Football League – the state's league of Israel. The league is contested by 14 clubs, and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with its second division Liga Leumit. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing between 33 and 36 matches each, totalling 240 matches in every season. The competition formed in 1999 following the decision of the Israel Football Association to form a new league. It is also ranked 21st in the UEFA coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years. Since 1932, a total of 15 clubs have been crowned champions of the Israeli Football League. Idan Maimon (born 27 November 1974) is an Israeli former handball player, and currently the head coach of Hapoel Rishon Lezion. Maimon was the captain of the Israeli national handball team, and the all-time top goalscorer of the Israeli handball with more than 3,000 goals (the previous record held by Akiva Lefler). Maccabi Rishon LeZion ( he, מכבי ראשון לציון) is a handball team from the city of Rishon LeZion, Israel. competes in the Ligat Winner Big.
