Liga Veneta Repubblica
Liga Veneta Repubblica (''Łiga Vèneta Republica'', Venetian Republic League, LVR) is a Venetist political party in Veneto, Italy. The party maintains a mildly separatist position and campaigns for the self-government of Veneto. The party's founder and long-time leader is Fabrizio Comencini. The LVR emerged in 1998 as a split from Liga Veneta (LV), the "national section" of Lega Nord in Veneto. Originally named Liga Veneta Repubblica, it changed its name to Veneti d'Europa (after the merger with Future Veneto in 2000) and Liga Fronte Veneto (after the merger with Fronte Marco Polo in 2001). Alessio Morosin
Alessio Morosin (born 20 June 1955 in Noale) is an Italian lawyer and politician. He joined Liga Veneta–Lega Nord in the early 1990s and was elected to the Regional Council of Veneto at the 1995 regional election. He made his name in Venetist circles for being the author of resolution 42/1998 (title: "Yesterday's and today's peoples and the right to self-determination"), concerning the "self-determination" of the Venetian people. The resolution read: "The Venetian people invokes its right to a democratic and direct referendum for the free expression of its right to self-determination". The resolution was approved by a majority vote in the Council on 22 April 1998. His strong Venetism eventually led Morosin to leave Liga Veneta–Lega Nord in October 1998 to join Liga Veneta Repubblica (LVR), along with Fabrizio Comencini and other four regional councillors. Lega Nord
Lega Nord (; acronym: LN), whose complete name is (), is a right-wing, federalist, populist and conservative political party in Italy. In the run-up of the 2018 general election, the party was rebranded as (), without changing its official name. The party was nonetheless frequently referred to only as "Lega" even before the rebranding, and informally as the (). The party's latest elected leader was Matteo Salvini. In 1989, the LN was established as a federation of six regional parties from northern and north-central Italy (Liga Veneta, Lega Lombarda, Piemont Autonomista, Uniun Ligure, Lega Emiliano-Romagnola and Alleanza Toscana), which became the party's founding "national" sections in 1991. Fabrizio Comencini
Fabrizio Comencini (born 6 November 1953, in Garda) is an Italian politician. Comencini started his political career in the Italian Social Movement (MSI), for which he was elected to the Regional Council of Veneto in 1985 and 1990. In the early 1990s, during his second term in the Council, he switched to Liga Veneta– Lega Nord. In 1994 he was elected secretary of the party and in 1995 he was re-elected to the Council. During his tenure as leader, Lega Nord had its best electoral result so far in Veneto and in any other region, scoring 29.7% of the vote at the 1996 general election. In 1998 Comencini broke with Umberto Bossi in the name of Venetian nationalism as opposed to Padanian nationalism. Franco Roccon
Franco Roccon (born 21 January 1960 in Belluno, Veneto) is a Venetist politician. Having joined Liga Veneta– Lega Nord in the early 1990s, Roccon was elected to the Regional Council of Veneto at the 1995 regional election. In October 1998 Roccon left Liga Veneta–Lega Nord and was a founding member of Liga Veneta Repubblica (LVR), along with Fabrizio Comencini and other four regional councillors. In the 2000 regional election LVR failed to field a list in the province of Belluno and, thus, Roccon was not re-elected. In May 2003 Roccon was elected mayor of Castellavazzo (Belluno) with 51.4% of the vote. In April 2008 he was re-elected by a landslide with 62.7% of the vote. Padanism
Padanian nationalism is an ideology and a regionalist movement demanding more autonomy or even independence from Italy, for Padania, a region encompassing Northern and, to some extent, part of central Italy. Lega Nord, a federation of regional parties of Northern Italy, proclaimed the formation of the "Federal Republic of Padania" in 1996 and was the main political proponent of Padania nationalism until 2013, when the party shifted back toward federalism and regionalism, as well as adopting to some extent Italian nationalism, under Matteo Salvini's leadership. As a subfield of public economics, fiscal federalism is concerned with "understanding which functions and instruments are best centralized and which are best placed in the sphere of decentralized levels of government" (Oates, 1999). North-East Union
The North-East Union (''Unione Nord-Est'') was a Venetist political party active in Veneto. The party was formed in 1996 by splinters from Liga Veneta–Lega Nord led by Adriano Bertaso, a regional councillor. In the 1996 general election the party won 2.0% of the vote for the Chamber of Deputies, by running only in the Verona–Padua–Vicenza–Rovigo constituency (3.4%), and 2.6% for the Senate. In 1999 Bertaso led the Union into the Liga Veneta Repubblica (LVR) of Fabrizio Comencini, but soon after left it and re-organized his party, which is currently a minor political force in Veneto. Mariangelo Foggiato
Mariangelo Foggiato (Possagno, 19 April 1954) is a Venetist politician. Having joined Liga Veneta–Lega Nord, he was elected to the Regional Council of Veneto in 1995. However, he left the party in 1998, when he founded Liga Veneta Repubblica (LVR) along with Fabrizio Comencini. He was national president of LVR until 1999, when he left the party, together with Senator Antonio Serena, founding the Liga dei Veneti, in dissent on the alliance with Forza Italia prospected by Fabrizio Comencini, LVR national secretary. Foggiato then abandoned politics until 2004, when returned to political activity as member of North-East Project (PNE), of which he was a founder (along with Giorgio Panto) and secretary. Ettore Beggiato
Ettore Beggiato (born 4 August 1954) is an Italian historian and politician. As member of several Venetist political parties (Liga Veneta 1980–1987, Union of the Venetian People 1987–1995, Liga Veneta–Lega Nord 1995–1998, Liga Veneta Repubblica/Veneti d'Europa/Liga Fronte Veneto 1998–2004), he was member of the Regional Council of Veneto from 1985 to 2000. He was secretary of Liga Fronte Veneto from 2002 to 2004, when he joined the North-East Project, party of which he is currently member.
