Lichfield Transmitting Station
The Lichfield transmitting station is situated close to Tamworth in Staffordshire in the West Midlands between the A5 and A51. The nearest geographical feature is Hopwas Hill. The station is owned and operated by Arqiva. The mast is known locally as Hopwas mast or Hints mast. History The station was the main 405-line ITV transmitter for the Midlands from 1956 until 1985. It has a tall guyed mast. The station came on air on 17 February 1956, using two 5 kW transmitters and a 16-stack antenna mounted on a tall Eiffelised tower (one that is tapered exponentially towards the top). This tower was replaced by the tall mast which came into service on 18 July 1961. ABC Weekend TV
ABC Weekend TV was the popular name of the British broadcaster ABC Television Limited, which provided the weekend service in the Midlands and Northern England regions of the Independent Television (ITV) network from 1956 to 1968. It was one of the " Big Four" companies that between them produced the majority of ITV networked programmes during this period. Sutton Coldfield Transmitting Station
The Sutton Coldfield transmitting station is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility located in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, England. In terms of population covered, it is the third most important transmitter in the UK, after Crystal Palace in London and Winter Hill near Bolton. History On 17 December 1949, it became the first television transmitter to broadcast outside London and the Home Counties, bringing BBC Television to viewers outside of the south-east of England for the first time. In 1949 the site housed Britain's first post-war Marconi-EMI band 1 405 line television transmitter. When it was taken out of service in 1981 it was the oldest working television transmitter in the world.
