Libyan Americans ( ar, الليبيون الأمريكيون) are United States citizens of Libyan descent or Libyan citizens who also have United States (US) citizenship. Most Libyan Americans speak Arabic and English. According to the 2000 Census there were 2,979 Americans who claimed Libyan ancestry. Some Libyan American associations are the Libyan American Organization, Libyan American Friendship Association (LAFA), Libyan American Association in Southern California and Libyan American Association of Georgia. The Libyan American Organization have as goal the Libya defense, promote political awareness among its members and integrate to all community in the association. In addition, the organization wants to improve education, health care and infrastructure of Libya. The association hopes to have the community support in order to "rebuilding our beloved country". Fadwa El Gallal
Fadwa El Gallal, also Fadwa Gallal () is a Libyan-American news anchor and journalist. She was born in Boston, USA, to a family originally from Benghazi. She lived in Egypt, where she studied at El Alsson School, then at the American University in Cairo. She worked for Al-Aan TV from 2013 to 2014 before moving in 2016 to work for Al-Arabiya. Libya–United States relations are the bilateral relations between the State of Libya and the United States of America. Relations are today cordial and cooperative, with particularly strong security cooperation only after the 2012 attack on the US liaison office or mission in Benghazi. Field Marshal Khalifa Belqasim Haftar ( ar, خليفة بلقاسم حفتر, Ḵalīfa Bilqāsim Ḥaftar; born 7 November 1943) is a Libyan-American politician, military officer, and the commander of the Tobruk-based Libyan National Army (LNA). On 2 March 2015, he was appointed commander of the armed forces loyal to the elected legislative body, the Libyan House of Representatives. Haftar was born in the Libyan city of Ajdabiya. He served in the Libyan army under Muammar Gaddafi, and took part in the coup that brought Gaddafi to power in 1969. He took part in the Libyan contingent against Israel in the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
