Manguinhos Library Park
Manguinhos Library Park ( pt, Biblioteca-Parque de Manguinhos) is a library and park complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The library opened on April 29, 2010. It contains over 25,000 books, 900 DVDs and 3 million songs, and also has a theatre that seats 200 people, a music room, classrooms, and a “Meu Bairro” ("My neighborhood") room created for community member meetings. It is located in Manguinhos, a favela in the neighborhood of Benfica. Benfica is in what is known as the "North Zone" of Rio de Janeiro. The creation of a "library park" complex was inspired by the library parks of Colombia, which were created as cultural projects in the less affluent neighborhoods of Medellín to promote social inclusion. A library park ( es, parque biblioteca) is a term first used in Colombia for an urban complex formed by a combination of a library building with ample surrounding green space for public use. These library parks are strategically located in the periphery of Medellín, a major Colombian city, to address the need for more cultural and education space and public services in less affluent neighborhoods. According to the Mayor of Medellín, "The library parks are cultural centers for social development that encourage citizen encounters, educational and recreational activities, building groups, the approach to the new challenges in digital culture. And they are also spaces for cultural services that allow cultural creation and strengthening of existing neighborhood organizations." The Phoenix Carnegie Library and Library Park, now known as the Carnegie Center, is a historic site in Phoenix, Arizona. Completed in 1908, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Background The first Phoenix public library opened in the spring of 1898 thanks to the efforts of the Friday Club, whose members collected books and secured two rooms on the second floor of the Fleming Block, one of the largest office buildings in downtown Phoenix. This venture was so well received that the following spring, the Phoenix Library Association was formed and the expanded library moved into a room in Phoenix City Hall which had been vacated by the legislative assembly, having moved to the new capitol building made the rooms available for other purposes. Library Park, formerly known as The Commons, City Park, and Central Park, is a park in Kenosha, Wisconsin designed by Ossian Cole Simonds. It features a library and war memorial designed by Daniel Burnham and a sculpture by Charles Henry Niehaus. Description When the town of Southport (the original name of Kenosha) was platted on October 30, 1838, a "Public Common" was reserved at Town Line Road and Kenosha Road. The land was donated by early settlers George Kimball and Charles Durkee, who wanted the old oaks to be preserved. By 1849, a Park Society was formed by local women to improve the park; their main contribution was the addition of a lagoon.
