Librarian Of The Year Award
The Librarian of the Year Award is an annual award made by '' Library Journal'' to "honor a professional librarian for outstanding achievement and accomplishments reflecting the loftiest service goals of the library profession." It was first awarded in 1988. Although it is often referred to as the "National Librarian of the Year Award," any working professional librarian from North America is eligible. ''Library Journal'' is an American trade publication for librarians. It was founded in 1876 by Melvil Dewey. It reports news about the library world, emphasizing public libraries, and offers feature articles about aspects of professional practice. It also reviews library-related materials and equipment. Each year since 2008, the Journal has assessed public libraries and awarded stars in their Star Libraries program. Its "Library Journal Book Review" does pre-publication reviews of several hundred popular and academic books each month. ''Library Journal'' has the highest circulation of any librarianship journal, according to Ulrich's—approximately 100,000. ''Books Unbanned'' is a United States library program that issues library cards nationwide from regional libraries in order to give electronic access to the library's digital and audio collections to teens and young adults living in U.S. locations where books are being challenged. Initially established by the Brooklyn Public Library, it was created in response to a wave of book challenges against schools and libraries in 2021 and now encompasses five libraries across the United States. Jo Budler
Jo Budler is a librarian from Kansas who served as the State Librarian of Kansas from 2010 to 2017, the sixteenth state librarian. Budler was an effective advocate for digital content in the state of Kansas, helping consolidate purchasing of digital items to save money for Kansas residents. She also communicated directly to Kansas residents how the ebook business worked for libraries, as well as served on the national Ebook Task Force of the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies. Her work won her Library Journal's Librarian of the Year award in 2013. Prior to coming to Kansas, Budler was appointed state librarian of Ohio in 2004. Susan Nutter
Susan Keene Nutter (1944 – March 25, 2019) was the vice provost and director of the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries where she worked for thirty years. While she was director, in 2000, NCSU Libraries received the first Association of College and Research Libraries Excellence in Academic Libraries Award. She was instrumental in the planning, development, and construction of NCSU’s Hunt Library. Called her "signature accomplishment," it was awarded the Stanford Prize for Innovation in Research Libraries in 2014. Before Susan's tenure NCSU Libraries "ranked near the bottom among North American research libraries."
