Liberty Flames Football Seasons
This is a list of seasons completed by the Liberty Flames football team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Liberty's first football team was fielded in 1973. Originally a NAIA team, Liberty moved to the NCAA's Division II in 1981, to Division I-AA (now called the FCS) in 1988, and to the FBS in 2018. Except from 2002 to 2017, when they were members of the Big South Conference, Liberty has been independent of a conference, though they have accepted an invitation to join Conference USA in 2023. Liberty Flames Football
The Liberty Flames football program represents Liberty University, a private Christian university located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in college football. The Flames compete in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as an independent. The program, which previously competed in Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), announced it would start a transition to the top level of NCAA football in July 2017. The Flames became a provisional FBS member in 2018, and became a full FBS member with bowl eligibility in 2019. In 2020, Liberty entered the rankings in the AP Poll at 25 for the first time in program history. In 2021, Liberty University announced the Flames would become full members of Conference USA effective for the 2023 football season. The 1985 Liberty Flames football team represented Liberty University as an independent during the 1985 NCAA Division II football season. Led by second-year head coach Morgan Hout, the Flames compiled an overall record of 3–4–1. The Flames' final two games of the season were canceled after their equipment was destroyed when their practice facility flooded during the 1985 Election Day floods. Morgan Hout
Morgan Hout is an American football coach best known for his stint as head coach of Liberty University in the 1980s. A graduate of Tennessee Temple University, Hout has coached for over 35 years on the collegiate and prep levels. Coaching career Morgan Hout began his college coaching career working for three years as an unpaid assistant for head coach Jerry Claiborne at the University of Maryland, College Park. After a total of six years at Maryland, Hout spent several years as an assistant coach at University of Richmond. In 1984, he was offered the head coaching job at Liberty University. He hired strength and conditioning coach Dave Williams from Texas A&M and directed the transition of the program to the Division I-AA level. He coached a number of players who went on to National Football League (NFL), including Fred Banks, Kelvin Edwards and pro bowlers Eric Green and Wayne Haddix. NCAA Division II Independent Schools
NCAA Division II independent schools are four-year institutions that compete in college athletics at the NCAA Division II level, but do not belong to an established athletic conference for a particular sport. These schools may however still compete as members of an athletic conference in other sports. A school may also be fully independent, and not belong to any athletic conference for any sport at all. The reason for independent status varies among institutions, but it is frequently because the school's primary athletic conference does not sponsor a particular sport.
