Liberty Flames Basketball
The Liberty Flames men's basketball team is the men's basketball team that represents Liberty University. They play their home games at Liberty Arena and are members of the ASUN Conference, having moved there in July 2018 after 27 seasons in the Big South. History The Liberty Men's Basketball program began in 1972 under head coach Dan Manley. Liberty University is the second youngest school in NCAA Division I, founded in 1971 (Florida Gulf Coast University was founded in 1991 with instruction starting in 1997). The Flames finished 13–14 in the inaugural season. Liberty University
Liberty University (LU) is a private Baptist university in Lynchburg, Virginia. It is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia (Southern Baptist Convention). Founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell Sr. and Elmer L. Towns, Liberty is among the world's largest Christian universities and the largest private non-profit universities in the United States by total student enrollment. Most of its enrollment is in online courses; in 2020, for example, the university enrolled about 15,000 in its residential program and 80,000 online. Rider Broncs
The Rider Broncs are the athletic teams of Rider University, a private nonsectarian university in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, United States. The school is a Division I member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and its athletes compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). For wrestling only, Rider is an affiliate member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The intercollegiate sports program at Rider was started by coach Clair Bee in the 1920s. Saint Joseph's Hawks Men's Basketball
The Saint Joseph's Hawks men's basketball team represents Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The program is classified in the NCAA's Division I, and the team competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Saint Joseph's competes as well as part of the Philadelphia Big 5. The North Carolina Tar Heels Men's basketball program is the college basketball team of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dale Layer
Dale Layer (born May 16, 1958) is an American basketball coach, currently a special assistant to head coach Buzz Williams at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Previously he served as an assistant coach for the Greensboro Swarm of the NBA Development League. He was previously the head coach of the Liberty Flames men's basketball team. He was fired by the university on March 5, 2015 after finishing the season with only a 2–16 conference record and an 8–24 overall record. It marks his second stint as a coach at Liberty; he spent the 2007-2008 campaign as an assistant to Ritchie McKay. Mel Hankinson
Mel Hankinson (born January 10, 1943) is an American former basketball coach and author. He served as the head men's basketball coach at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (1970–1973), Roanoke College (1973–1977), Delta State University (1977–1983), Samford University (1985–1987), The Master's College—now known as The Master's University (1988–1993), and Liberty University (1998–2002). Hankinson has written a number of books and starred in videos on techniques for coaching basketball. Hankinson spent over three decades coaching at the collegiate level. Randy Dunton
Randy Dunton (born December 22, 1960) is a former head men's basketball coach at Liberty University. He had been the assistant under head coach Jeff Meyer, who was subsequently let go in 1997. Dunton was named the interim head coach for 1997–1998, a season that saw the Liberty Flames defeat in-state rival Virginia. However, he was not offered a contract at the end of the season, and Mel Hankinson became the head coach. Dunton later coached at Binghamton University as an assistant. He was finally offered the head coaching position at Liberty University after the school suffered through four disappointing seasons under Hankinson. Dale Gibson
Dale Gibson is a former men's basketball coach at Liberty University (then called Lynchburg Baptist College). After leaving coaching, he served as a professor at Liberty where he started the school's Sport Management program. Currently he teaches at Tusculum College. As a coach, he served as the first assistant basketball coach at Liberty University beginning with the program's launch in 1972.
