Liberia River
The Liberia River is a river in the northwestern Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. It rises on the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano (1,916 m) in the Cordillera Central and follows a southwesterly course to the town of Liberia, Costa Rica, Liberia. , 2007. Guanacaste Province
Guanacaste () is a province of Costa Rica located in the northwestern region of the country, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Alajuela Province to the east, and Puntarenas Province to the southeast. It is the most sparsely populated of all the provinces of Costa Rica. The province covers an area of and as of 2010, had a population of 354,154, with annual revenue of $2 million. Guanacaste's capital is Liberia. Other important cities include Cañas and Nicoya. Rincón De La Vieja Volcano
Rincón de la Vieja is an active andesitic complex volcano in north-western Costa Rica, about from Liberia, in the province of Guanacaste. Toponymy Its name means "The Old Woman's Corner", or "Old Woman’s Nook" a reference to a local legend about princess Curabanda whose lover Mixcoac, chief of a neighboring enemy tribe, who was thrown into the crater by her father Curabande, when he learned about their affair. She went on living on the side of the volcano, giving birth to a son. To be with its father, she threw her son into the volcano, too. She continued to live on the volcano and became a recluse living on the mountain, and was credited with powers of healing. Rincón de la Vieja stands above sea level, and its summit is the highest point in Rincón de la Vieja National Park. It erupted most recently in June 2021. Liberia () is a district and the largest city in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica, located northwest of the national capital, San José, in the canton with the same name, of which it is the head city or capital. It is a major center for the country's tourism industry. Liberia has been nicknamed ''la ciudad blanca'' (the white city) due to the white gravel that was once used to make the city's roads and the whitewashed colonial houses which used to make up a large part of the city. It had a population of 56,899 in 2013. History Modern-day Liberia was founded as a hermitage without any legal or formal act of foundation on 4 September 1769. Tempisque River
The Tempisque River, or Río Tempisque, is long, located entirely in Costa Rica flowing from the Guanacaste Cordillera near the Orosí Volcano and emptying into the Gulf of Nicoya. It passes through the Palo Verde National Park and is an important habitat for various species of crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and birds. The river is heavily silted, limiting navigation to shallow crafts that can cross the muddy flats. Tidal conditions dictate the timing to cross the bar at the river mouth. Historically the Tempisque was used to float logs down to the sea. The logs were gathered at Chira Island to be loaded on ships. The Tempisque River Bridge was built linking the Nicoya Peninsula to southern Guanacaste and hence significantly cut travel time to San José.
