Liberia Canton
Liberia is a canton in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. The head city is in Liberia district. History Liberia was created on 7 December 1848 by decree 167. Geography Liberia has an area of km2 and a mean elevation of metres. Prominent geologic features of Liberia include Cerro Cacao (Cacao Mountain) and Rincón de la Vieja. The latter is the center of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park. The canton also includes the most visited portion of Santa Rosa National Park on its northwest border. The Río Salto delineates the southwestern border as far as the Tempisque River, and the Tempisque forms the border on the southeast as far as the Bahía Naranjo (Orange Bay). Tempisque River
The Tempisque River, or Río Tempisque, is long, located entirely in Costa Rica flowing from the Guanacaste Cordillera near the Orosí Volcano and emptying into the Gulf of Nicoya. It passes through the Palo Verde National Park and is an important habitat for various species of crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and birds. The river is heavily silted, limiting navigation to shallow crafts that can cross the muddy flats. Tidal conditions dictate the timing to cross the bar at the river mouth. Historically the Tempisque was used to float logs down to the sea. The logs were gathered at Chira Island to be loaded on ships. The Tempisque River Bridge was built linking the Nicoya Peninsula to southern Guanacaste and hence significantly cut travel time to San José.
