Liberals For Forests
Liberals for Forests was an Australian political minor party. It contested both state and federal elections between 2002 and 2008, but only ever achieved one elected representative – Janet Woollard (elected as an Independent) in Western Australia. It never achieved representation at the federal level. The party was founded in 2001 by Dr Keith Woollard, husband of Janet Woollard and an ex- AMA president. Janet successfully contested a seat in the February 2001 state election, was re-elected at the 2005 election and again at the 2008 election. The party generally professed itself to be ideologically aligned with the centre-right sympathies of the Liberal Party of Australia, but was aligned with the ALP in certain states such as NSW but with a greater regard to environmentalism. Janet Woollard
Janet May Woollard (born 13 February 1955) is an Australian former politician who served as a member for the seat of Alfred Cove in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2013. Woollard successfully contested the seat in the February 2001 state election as an Independent candidate (representing the Liberals for Forests party). She was re-elected at the 2005 election and again at the 2008 election. In 2007 Woollard's son, Luke, crashed his family's boat whilst drink driving, seriously injuring a passenger. The injured passenger successfully sued Luke, who said he was unable to pay the 230,000 compensation and indicated he faced bankruptcy. Woollard and her husband initially refused to pay the compensation on behalf of their son. However, they settled the case following intense media scrutiny. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party dissenting splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. 2008 Western Australian State Election
The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 6 September 2008 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, in power since the 2001 election and led since 25 January 2006 by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Colin Barnett since 6 August 2008. The election resulted in a hung parliament with no party gaining a majority. Labor was two seats short of a majority in the expanded legislature.
