Liberal Democrat Friends Of Turkey
Liberal Democrat Friends of Turkey (LDFoT) is a UK-based campaign group promoting support within the British Liberal Democrat Party for a strong bilateral relationship between Britain and Turkey. It also seeks to strengthen the bond between the British Liberal Democrats and Turkish liberals, organising meetings in both the UK and Turkey between senior figures. Liberal Democrats Friends of Turkey promotes active participation in politics and seeks to explain social liberalism and the services that the Liberal Democrats have done, to the citizens of both countries. The Liberal Democrats work for a society where personal, political and economic liberty are combined with social justice, decentralisation of power and environmental sustainability. This article gives an overview of liberalism in Turkey. Liberalism was introduced in the Ottoman Empire during the Tanzimat period of reformation. History On 30 May 1876, Murad V became the Sultan when his uncle Abdülaziz was deposed. He was highly influenced by French culture and was a liberal. Social justice is justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. In Western and Asian cultures, the concept of social justice has often referred to the process of ensuring that individuals fulfill their societal roles and receive their due from society. Meral Hussein Ece, Baroness Hussein-Ece, (born 10 October 1955) is a British Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. She is the first woman of Turkish Cypriot origin to be a member of either house of Parliament after she was appointed a Liberal Democrat working peer on 28 May 2010. Andrew Nicholas Duff, OBE (born 25 December 1950) is a British politician who presided over the Union of European Federalists (UEF) from 2008 to 2013. A member of the Liberal Democrats, he served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the East of England from 1999 to 2014.
