Liam Abernethy
William J. Abernethy (1929 – 21 October 1980) was an Irish hurler who played as a right corner-forward for the Cork senior team. Abernethy made his first appearance for the team during the 1951-52 National Hurling League and was a sometimes regular member of the starting fifteen until he left the panel after the 1952 championship. During that time he won one All-Ireland medal on the field of play and one Munster medal as a non-playing substitute. At club level Abernethy was a one-time county junior championship medalist with Castlemartyr. Playing career Club Abernethy played his club hurling with Castlemartyr. In 1951 Castlemartyr captured their second divisional junior title in succession. Having failed in the county series the previous year, Abernethy's side subsequently qualified for the county championship decider. Castlemartyr GAA
Castlemartyr GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Castlemartyr, Cork, Republic of Ireland. The club fields teams in both Gaelic football and hurling. It is a member of the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. History Castlemartyr hurling club was founded in 1924, though the area had been noted for its hurlers and footballers before that year, and a football team existed in Castlemartyr at the end of the 19th century. The early days of the club were not marked by any notable triumph, but by 1935 the club reached the East Cork final, and recorded the first of seven divisional successes. They went on to the county final afterwards, and though they failed to capture the crown after four encounters with Mayfield, two of which were abandoned. Cloughduv GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association based in the village of Cloughduv in County Cork, Ireland. The club is a member of the Muskerry division of Cork GAA. The club fields hurling team only. There are two Gaelic football clubs in the parish (Kilmurry parish) - Canovee and Kilmurry - and there is often an overlap of players between the different clubs. History Hurling in the area pre-dates the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Thurles in 1884; when the Cork County Board was inaugurated in 1886, 21 clubs attended including Ryecourt GAA represented by Michael J Keane.
