Liam Dowling
Liam Dowling (25 January 1931 – 20 November 1996) was an Irish former hurler who played as a full-forward for the Cork senior team. Dowling made his first appearance for the team during the 1952 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen at various intervals for much of the next decade. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals, two Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. At club level Dowling is a county senior championship medalist with Sarsfields. He also played with Castlemartyr. Playing career Club Dowling began his club hurling career with his local Castlemartyr club. In 1951 he won his first county junior championship with the club following a 6-5 to 2-7 defeat of Cloughduv. Dowling won further divisional titles with the club before moving to the Sarsfields club in the mid-fifties. 'Sars' secured the county senior championship in 1957. Castlemartyr GAA
Castlemartyr GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Castlemartyr, Cork, Republic of Ireland. The club fields teams in both Gaelic football and hurling. It is a member of the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. History Castlemartyr hurling club was founded in 1924, though the area had been noted for its hurlers and footballers before that year, and a football team existed in Castlemartyr at the end of the 19th century. The early days of the club were not marked by any notable triumph, but by 1935 the club reached the East Cork final, and recorded the first of seven divisional successes. They went on to the county final afterwards, and though they failed to capture the crown after four encounters with Mayfield, two of which were abandoned. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. Castlemartyr Hurlers
Castlemartyr (, formerly anglicised as ''Ballymarter'' or ''Ballymartyr'') is a village in County Cork, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is located 25 minutes east of Cork city, 10 km (6 mi) east of Midleton, 16 km (10 mi) west of Youghal and 6 km (4 mi) from the coast. The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na Gaillimhe) or Galway GAA are one of the 32 county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway county teams. Cloughduv GAA
Cloughduv GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association based in the village of Cloughduv in County Cork, Ireland. The club is a member of the Muskerry division of Cork GAA. The club fields hurling team only. There are two Gaelic football clubs in the parish (Kilmurry parish) - Canovee and Kilmurry - and there is often an overlap of players between the different clubs. History Hurling in the area pre-dates the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Thurles in 1884; when the Cork County Board was inaugurated in 1886, 21 clubs attended including Ryecourt GAA represented by Michael J Keane. Shortly thereafter the name was changed to Cloch Dubh. Success was not long in arriving, culminating in 1912 in a great victory in the County Senior Beamish Shield. The Cork Junior A Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Junior A Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Cork JAHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking junior clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland.
