Airwave novels are stories told over radio broadcasts. It is a term mostly used within Hong Kong culture. The stories can be anywhere from 15 minutes to hours long. History The first radio station to offer airwave novel entertainment in Hong Kong was Radio Rediffusion. 1950s In Hong Kong
The 1950s in Hong Kong began against the chaotic backdrop of the resumption of British sovereignty after the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong ended in 1945, and the renewal of the Nationalist-Communist Civil War in mainland China. It prompted a large influx of refugees from the mainland, causing a huge population surge: from 1945 to 1951, the population grew from 600,000 to 2.1 million. The government struggled to accommodate these immigrants. Unrest in China also prompted businesses to relocate their assets and capital from Shanghai to Hong Kong. Together with the cheap labour of the immigrants, the seeds of Hong Kong's economic miracle in the second half of the 20th century were sown. Reinaldo Maria Cordeiro (; 12 December 1924 – 13 January 2023), known professionally as Uncle Ray, was a Hong Kong broadcaster, disc jockey and actor at RTHK Radio 3. He was named "The World's Most Durable DJ" in 2000 by the Guinness Book of World Records. He was of Portuguese descent. Early life and career Born Reinaldo Maria Cordeiro in Hong Kong on December 12, 1924, Uncle Ray was one of six siblings. Cordeiro worked as a warden in Stanley Prison and then as a clerk at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation shortly after World War II. Radio career In 1949, at the age of 25, he started his broadcasting career as a scriptwriter with Radio Rediffusion. He eventually became a DJ and hosted a programme called ''Progressive Jazz''. HK01 () is a Hong Kong-based online news portal launched by Yu Pun-hoi, a former chairman of the ''Ming Pao''. It is operated by HK01 Company Limited, established in June 2015. The website went live on 11 January 2016. It publishes a weekly paper every Friday, the first edition of which was released on 11 March 2016. The company has a staff of approximately 700. Rediffusion Television (RTV) was the first television station in Hong Kong, making it both the first British colony and the first predominantly ethnically Chinese city to have television.Kitley, Philip. 003(2003). Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK, , aka Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company Limited is one of the two commercial radio broadcasting companies in Hong Kong along with Metro Radio Hong Kong. CRHK provides an array of entertainment, including informative, educational, artistical and cultural programmes; CRHK also provides updates on current affairs as well as news and weather reports. Radio broadcasting is transmission of audio (sound), sometimes with related metadata, by radio waves to radio receivers belonging to a public audience. Radio Vilaverde Lda
Founded by legendary Macau business figure Pedro José Lobo, Rádio Vilaverde Lda. () originally operated from his home of the same name in the northern part of the city and is now a Macau-based radio station serving Macau and nearby Chinese cities such as Hong Kong, as well as Zhuhai and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. Currently located at Macau Jockey Club complex, it broadcasts at FM 99.5. It has live broadcast of horse racing in Macau. But in 2012, the radio was only broadcasting online because the transmitter on the Jockey Club was damaged by a tropical storm.
