The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (german: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes) and its variants were the highest awards in the military of Nazi Germany during World War II. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded for a wide range of reasons and across all ranks, from a senior commander for skilled leadership of his troops in battle to a low-ranking soldier for a single act of extreme gallantry. A total of 7,321 awards were made between its first presentation on 30 September 1939 and its last bestowal on 17 June 1945. This number is based on the acceptance by the Association of Knight's Cross Recipients (AKCR). Presentations were made to members of the three military branches of the Wehrmacht—the German Army (Wehrmacht), German Army, Kriegsmarine (Navy) and Luftwaffe (Air Force)—as well as the Waffen-SS, the Reich Labour Service and the Volkssturm (German national militia). Hans Ritter Von Lex
Hans Ritter von Lex (1893-1970) was a German political figure and the President of the German Red Cross (german: Deutsches Rotes Kreuz) from 1961 to 1967. He was born Hans Lex on October 27, 1893, in Rosenheim, Upper Bavaria, German Empire, Germany. He died February 26, 1970, in Munich, Germany. Biography After graduation from a Gymnasium (school), Gymnasium in 1912, Lex began the study of law at the University of Munich. In 1914, shortly after taking his first state exam, his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. Lex volunteered to serve in the Bavarian Army and served with the Infantry Life Regiment, Bavaria's elite bodyguard regiment. He was commissioned a reserve lieutenant in March 1915 and in September 1915 he went to the Bavarian 18th Reserve Infantry Regiment. For his bravery on July 31, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, Lex was decorated with the Military Order of Max Joseph, Bavaria's highest bravery decoration.
