Lewis Williams Ross
Lewis Williams Ross (October 15, 1827 – November 22, 1902) was an American politician, lawyer, and legal academic. The Ross family was Protestant, moved from Scotland to Ireland, and a later descendant, Daniel Ross, moved to the state of New Jersey in the United States. Ezekiel Ross, the grandfather of Lewis Ross, moved from New Jersey to Ohio in 1812, then settled in Butler County in 1814. Lewis Ross was born in Hanover Township, and lived on the family farm until the age of twenty, when he began attending Farmers' College in May 1848. In 1850, he transferred to Miami University, and graduated in 1852. He then studied law in Hamilton, Ohio, passing the bar in 1854. Ross first came to Iowa in 1856, residing in Cass County and practicing law there from 1858, before moving to Council Bluffs in 1861. Lewis Winans Ross
Lewis Winans Ross (December 8, 1812 – October 29, 1895) was an American attorney, merchant, and politician. He served two nonconseutive terms on the Illinois House of Representatives from 1840 to 1842 and 1844 to 1846, and was U.S. Representative from Illinois's 9th congressional district between 1863 and 1869. He was widely known as an antiwar Peace Democrat or Copperhead during the American Civil War. Early life Born near Seneca Falls, New York, on December 8, 1812, Lewis Ross was the oldest son of Ossian M. and Mary (Winans) Ross. In 1820, Lewis Ross moved with his family to Illinois, where his father had been given land in the Illinois Military Tract in return for military service in the War of 1812. In 1821, the family settled in an area that later became Lewistown, Illinois, named for Lewis Ross by his father. Lewis Ross (Canadian Politician)
Lewis Ross (1825 – September 20, 1882) was a Canadian merchant and political figure. He represented Durham East in the House of Commons of Canada from 1872 to 1878 as a Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal Reformer member. He was born in Fearn Parish, Ross-shire, Scotland and was educated there. After coming to Canada, he became a merchant in Port Hope, Ontario, Port Hope. Ross was a director of the Midland Railway, the Midland Manufacturing Company and the Royal Canadian Insurance Company. He was also chairman of the local public school board and president of the Port Hope Agricultural Society. In 1852, he married a Miss Clute. Ross ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1878 and 1882, losing to Arthur Trefusis Heneage Williams each time. Ross died in Port Hope at the age of 57. He was the brother of Walter Ross (politician), Walter Ross who served in the House of Commons around the same time.
