Lewis County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,033. Its county seat is Weston. The county was formed in 1816 from Harrison County. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.2%) is water. In 1863, West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Lewis County was initially divided into five townships: Battelle, Jane Lew, Lincoln, Sheridan, and Willey. Between 1870 and 1880, these were renamed "Collins Settlement", "Court House", "Freemans Creek", "Hackers Creek", and "Skin Creek". Weston is a city in Lewis County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,943 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Lewis County, and home to the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia and the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. History Weston was founded in 1818 as Preston; the name was changed to Fleshersville soon after, and then to Weston in 1819. The city was incorporated in 1846. Weston is the site of the former Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, a psychiatric hospital and National Historic Landmark which has been mostly vacant since its closure in 1994 upon its replacement by the nearby William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital. Lewis County High School (Weston, West Virginia)
Lewis County High School was created in 1966 with the consolidation of Weston High School, Jane Lew High School and Walkersville High School in Lewis County, West Virginia. The original Lewis County High School was located on Court Street in Weston, West Virginia. The Weston Colored School's one high school student was absorbed into Weston High in 1954 after the historic Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. Lewis County High moved to its present location, just south of Weston, in 1994. The original Lewis County High now serves as Robert L. Bland Middle School. Lewis County High School is a grade 9-12 school with an enrollment of 677 students. LCHS serves Lewis County, West Virginia which has a rural population of about 16,500 people.
