Levi S. Chatfield
Levi Starr Chatfield (March 7, 1808 – August 4, 1884) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He was the son of Enos Chatfield (1782–1858) and Hannah (Starr) Chatfield (1782–1857). He was born in that part of the Town of Butternuts which in 1849 was separated as the Town of Morris, in Otsego County, New York. When the Village of Laurens was incorporated in 1834, he was chosen its first Town Clerk. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Otsego Co.) in 1839, 1840, 1841 and 1842, and was Speaker in 1842. He was one of the first trustees of the Presbyterian church of Laurens when it was organized on January 16, 1844. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1846. In 1847, he ran for Attorney General on the Democratic ticket, but was defeated by Whig/ Anti-Rent candidate Ambrose L. Jordan. Butternuts, New York
Butternuts is a town located in Otsego County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 1,786. The Town of Butternuts is located in the southwestern part of the county, and is west of Oneonta. History Butternuts is generally believed to be named for three butternut (a.k.a. white walnut) trees growing from one stump that originally marked the corner of the townships of what is now New Lisbon, Pittsfield and Morris when this entire section of the county was surveyed by Richard Smith before the Revolution. Said tree was depicted as the corporate logo of the Butternuts Woolen & Cotton textile firm but was cut down by the Lull family to build their log cabin. The 1849 New York state election was held on November 6, 1849, to elect the Secretary of State, the State Comptroller, the Attorney General, the State Treasurer, the State Engineer, a Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, a Canal Commissioner and an Inspector of State Prisons, as well as all members of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. Gardner Stow
Gardner Stow (August 1789 – June 25, 1866) was an American lawyer and politician who served as New York State Attorney General. Early life He was in Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts, the son of Timothy Stow and Mary (Kendall) Stow. The family removed first to Warrensburg, and in 1802 to Bolton. In 1806, he moved to Sandy Hill, New York to study law with Roswell Weston, and made the acquaintance of fellow students Silas Wright, Zebulon R. Shipherd, and Esek Cowen, who were studying with Roger Skinner. When Cowen was admitted to the bar and commenced practice, Stow continued his studies at the office of Gansevoort and Cowen in Gansevoort's Mills, Saratoga County, New York. He was admitted to the bar in 1811, and practiced with Cowen in Northumberland, before later relocating to Elizabethtown. Trinity Church is a historic parish church in the Episcopal Diocese of New York, at the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City.
