Dry goods is a historic term describing the type of product line a store carries, which differs by region. The term comes from the textile trade, and the shops appear to have spread with the mercantile trade across the British Empire (and former British territories) as a means of bringing supplies and manufactured goods to far-flung settlements and homesteads. Starting in the mid-18th century, these stores began by selling supplies and textile goods to remote communities, and many customized the products they carried to the area's needs. This continued to be the trend well into the early 20th century. The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) was a gold rush that began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. The sudden influx of gold into the money supply reinvigorated the American economy; the sudden population increase allowed California to go rapidly to statehood, in the Compromise of 1850. Rivet
A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener. Before being installed, a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite to the head is called the ''tail''. On installation, the rivet is placed in a punched or drilled hole, and the tail is ''upset'', or ''bucked'' (i.e., deformed), so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place. In other words, the pounding or pulling creates a new "head" on the tail end by smashing the "tail" material flatter, resulting in a rivet that is roughly a dumbbell shape. Jacob Davis (inventor)
Jacob William Davis (born Jākobs Jufess; 1831–1908) was an American tailor of Latvian-Jewish origin who is credited with inventing modern jeans. Growing up in Latvia, he emigrated to the United States as a young man and spent some time in Canada as well. He invented jeans by using sturdy cloth and rivets to strengthen weak points in the seams, and partnered with Levi Strauss to mass-produce them. Early life Jacob Youphes was born to a Latvian-Jewish family in the city of Rīga, in 1831. During his time in Latvia, he trained and worked as a tailor. Immigration to America In 1854, at the age of 23, he emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City where he changed his name to Jacob Davis. David Stern (businessman)
David Stern (1820–1875) was a German-born American businessman who helped to found Levi Strauss & Co. with his brother-in-law Levi Strauss. Biography David Stern was born to a Jewish family in Bavaria in 1820. In the 1840s, he immigrated to the United States first to New York then the American South and finally to San Francisco in 1853 or 1855 where he was later joined by his brother-in-law Levi Strauss. Strauss had been sent to San Francisco - which was booming due to the gold rush - to scout out a larger location for the family merchandising company. In 1858, he was listed as a co-owner of the company under the name ''Strauss, Levi (David Stern & Lewis Strauss) importers clothing'' in the San Francisco Directory where Stern served as its manager and Strauss as its sales manager.
