Leuconidae
Leuconidae is a family (biology), family of marine hooded shrimp (order (biology), order Cumacea). The family was established by Georg Ossian Sars in his 1878 study of Mediterranean cumaceans. Description Leuconidae retain the original number of free thorax, thoracic somites, but do not possess a free telson. Their mandible (arthropod), mandibles are truncated Dorsum (biology), dorsally to the molar. In males, the flagellum of the second Antenna (biology), antenna reaches beyond the hindmost edge of the carapace. Their gills do not have gill plates or other supports. The endopods (interior branches) of the uropods are present on two (or more rarely one) segments. The males of almost all Leuconidae also have pleopods, typically two pairs that lack an external process on the inner ramus. In females the second antenna is greatly reduced. They have exopods (outer branches) on the maxillipeds and on the first two pereiopods, in females of some species often also on the third, and i ...

Cumacea
Cumacea is an order of small marine crustaceans of the superorder Peracarida, occasionally called hooded shrimp or comma shrimp. Their unique appearance and uniform body plan makes them easy to distinguish from other crustaceans. They live in soft-bottoms such as mud and sand, mostly in the marine environment. There are more than 1,500 species of cumaceans formally described. The species diversity of Cumacea increases with depth. Anatomy Cumaceans have a strongly enlarged cephalothorax with a carapace, a slim abdomen, and a forked tail. The length of most species varies from . The carapace of a typical cumacean is composed of several fused dorsal head parts and the first three somites of the thorax. This carapace encloses the appendages that serve for respiration and feeding. In most species, there are two eyes at the front side of the head shield, often merged into a single dorsal eye lobe. The five posterior somites of the thorax form the pereon. The pleon (abdomen) consists ...

Uropod
Uropods are posterior appendages found on a wide variety of crustaceans. They typically have functions in locomotion. Definition Uropods are often defined as the appendages of the last body segment of a crustacean. An alternative definition suggested by Frederick R. Schram restricts the term to those structures arising from the segment before the anal segment (the segment which carries the anus). Under this latter definition, the appendages of the anal segment are caudal ramus, caudal rami, which are analogy (biology), analogous to uropods. Form Uropods are typically biramous – comprising an endopod and an exopod. The exopod is typically the larger, and may be divided in two by a transverse suture known as the diaeresis. The uropods may work in concert with the telson to form a "tail fan". References
