Let The People Sing (contest)
Let the People Sing was a choir contest run and broadcast by BBC Radio radio from 1950s to 1980s. The contest also led to new choral works being commissioned.The Musical Times - Volume 101 - Page 11 1960 and also Armstrong Gibbs's Suite of Songs from the British Isles (for s.a.t.b. choir). This last was originally a B.B.C. commission for the 1959 'Let The People Sing' contest. In 1959 The Fenland Singers, conducted by Catherine M. Baxter, won the mixed voice competition. In 1958 they had come second when Agnes Duncan's choir had won the children's and the youth class. BBC Radio
BBC Radio is an operational business division and service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (which has operated in the United Kingdom under the terms of a royal charter since 1927). ''Radio Times'' (currently styled as ''RadioTimes'') is a British weekly listings magazine devoted to television and radio programme schedules, with other features such as interviews, film reviews and lifestyle items. Founded in May 1923 by John Reith, then general manager of the British Broadcasting Company (from 1 January 1927, the British Broadcasting Corporation), it was the world's first broadcast listings magazine. Agnes Duncan
Agnes Duncan Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, MBE (10 November 1899 – 1996) was a Scottish singer and choral conductor. Her Scottish Junior Singers won the leading BBC choral competition on two occasions. Life Duncan was born in Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire. and she was singing in Vale of Leven children’s choir, with her elder sister, when she was ten. She became the contralto soloist of Glasgow Cathedral Choir. She first attended the first Glasgow Music Festival in 1911. She formed the Scottish Junior Singers in 1943. It was launched on credit and it had 60 singers. In 1952 she conducted at the Musicians at the Edinburgh International Festival, 1947 to 1957, Edinburgh International Festival. Royal Festival Hall
The Royal Festival Hall is a 2,700-seat concert, dance and talks venue within Southbank Centre in London. It is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames, not far from Hungerford Bridge, in the London Borough of Lambeth. It is a Grade I listed building, the first post-war building to become so protected (in 1981). The London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the London Sinfonietta, Chineke! and Aurora are resident orchestras at Southbank Centre. The hall was built as part of the Festival of Britain for London County Council, and was officially opened on 3 May 1951. Singing Competitions
Singing is the act of creating musical sounds with the voice. A person who sings is called a singer, artist or vocalist (in jazz and/or popular music). BBC Music
BBC Music is responsible for the music played across the BBC. The current director of music is Bob Shennan, who is also the controller of BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music, and the BBC Asian Network. Officially it is a part of the BBC's Radio operational division and is directly responsible to Helen Boaden (director of Radio); however, its remit also includes music used in television and online services.
