"Let's Dance" is a jazz standard, an instrumental, used by Benny Goodman as his opening theme for over 50 years. Background "Let's Dance" was adapted from the piece '' Invitation to the Dance'' by Carl Maria von Weber, and given the name of the radio program Benny Goodman performed on from 1934-1935, '' Let's Dance''. Goodman used "Let's Dance" as an opening for almost all of his performances, eventually becoming his official theme song. The song was composed by Gregory Stone and Joseph Bonime, with lyrics written by Fanny May Baldridge. Goodman never recorded the theme with the lyrics, although The Modernaires recorded it in a tribute to him in 1954. Benny Goodman
Benjamin David Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American clarinetist and bandleader known as the "King of Swing". From 1936 until the mid-1940s, Goodman led one of the most popular swing big bands in the United States. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938, is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music." Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. During an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first integrated jazz groups, his quartet and quintet. There is no definitive list of jazz standards, and the list of songs deemed to be standards changes over time. ''Invitation to the Dance'' (''Aufforderung zum Tanz''), Op. 65, J. 260, is a piano piece in rondo form written by Carl Maria von Weber in 1819. It is also well known in the 1841 orchestration by Hector Berlioz. It is sometimes called ''Invitation to the Waltz'', but this is a mistranslation of the original. Background Weber dedicated ''Invitation to the Dance'' to his wife Caroline (they had been married only a few months). Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber (18 or 19 November 17865 June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, virtuoso pianist, guitarist, and critic who was one of the first significant composers of the Romantic era. Best known for his operas, he was a crucial figure in the development of German ''Romantische Oper'' (German Romantic opera). ''Let's Dance'' was a Saturday night radio music program broadcast by NBC in the mid-1930s. Sponsored by the National Biscuit Company (initially to promote their new Ritz Crackers), it aired for three full hours, starting at 10:30pm on the East Coast. This late-night timeslot gave the program a much larger audience on the West Coast when heard earlier in the evening. ''Let's Dance'' was a five-hour broadcast from New York, yet calculated so that all time zones heard three hours of music. The East Coast and Central Time zones got only the first three hours. Mountain Time zone listeners tuned into the second, third and fourth hours. Hours three, four and five were heard on the West Coast. The Modernaires
The Modernaires was an American vocal group, best known for performing in the 1940s alongside Glenn Miller. Career The Modernaires began in 1934 as "Don Juan, Two and Three," a trio of schoolmates from Lafayette High School in Buffalo, New York. The members were Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein, and Bill Conway. (Jay Warner, in his book ''American Singing Groups: A History from 1940s to Today'', wrote, "They called themselves Three Weary Willies". He added that the trio performed as Don Juan and Two and Three when they "headed for New York in the mid-'30s".)
