Leslie Thomas Starcevich, Victoria Cross, VC (5 September 1918 – 17 November 1989) was an List of Australian Victoria Cross recipients, Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of British and Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth armed forces. He received the award as member of the 2/43rd Battalion (Australia), 2/43rd Battalion, during the Borneo campaign (1945), Borneo campaign of the Second World War. Early life Leslie Thomas "Tom" Starcevich was born on 5 September 1918 at Subiaco, Western Australia, the son of immigrants: Gertrude May Starcevich ( Waters; born c. 1897, Dunkirk, Kent, England) and Joseph Starcevich (born c. 1892, Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia, Croatia-Slavonia, Austro-Hungarian Empire). Subiaco (known colloquially as Subi) is an inner-Western suburbs (Perth), western suburb of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is approximately west of Perth's central business district, in the City of Subiaco local government area. Historically a working-class suburb containing a mixture of industrial and commercial land uses, since the 1990s the area has been one of Australia's most celebrated urban redevelopment projects.
