Leslie Hollins
Leslie Henry Hollins (12 September 1897 – 4 September 1984) was an Australian politician. Born at Wonthaggi to farmer Henry Hollins and Lilian Mary Theresa Gardner, he attended local state schools before becoming an automotive engineer. He worked with the Melbourne General Omnibus Company in 1915 before serving in the Australian Imperial Force from 1916 to 1919. After the war he worked in England for a motor engineering firm before returning to Melbourne, establishing his own business, Hollins Motors, in 1921. On 26 December 1922 he married Rita Annie Payne, daughter of Senator Herbert Payne, with whom he had three children. A social credit campaigner, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1940 as the Independent member for Hawthorn. He was appointed Minister of Public Instruction and Labour in October 1945, but he was defeated at the election in November. Wonthaggi
Wonthaggi is a seaside town located south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Known originally for its coal mining, it is now the largest town in South Gippsland, a regional area with extensive tourism, beef and dairy industries. The name "Wonthaggi" is an Australian Aboriginal name meaning "home" from the Boonwurrung (south-central Kulin). It was used in the area some time before 1 August 1910 when the town was founded. History The Boonwurrung aboriginal people were custodians of this stretch of coast for thousands of years prior to white settlement. The Boakoolawal clan lived in the Kilcunda area south of the Bass River, and the Yowenjerre were west of the Tarwin River along what is now the Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park. The Parliament of Victoria is the bicameral legislature of the Australian state of Victoria that follows a Westminster-derived parliamentary system. First Australian Imperial Force
The First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) was the main expeditionary force of the Australian Army during the First World War. It was formed as the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) following Britain's declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division and one light horse brigade. The infantry division subsequently fought at Gallipoli between April and December 1915, with a newly raised second division, as well as three light horse brigades, reinforcing the committed units. After being evacuated to Egypt, the AIF was expanded to five infantry divisions, which were committed to the fighting in France and Belgium along the Western Front in March 1916. Croydon, Victoria
Croydon is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 28 km east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Maroondah local government area. Croydon recorded a population of 28,608 at the 2021 census. History Dating back to 1840 the land was first utilised by settlers for grazing and the first road cut through the area now known as Croydon, was initially known as Sawmill Road, as a sawmill was nearby. Later it became known as Oxford Road and later Mt Dandenong Road, some time in the early 1900s. Owing to the coarse silvery-white grass, the area now known as Croydon was first called "White Flats".
