Lesbia Soravilla
Lesbia Soravilla (22 May 1906 – January 1989) was a Cuban writer, feminist and activist, prominent in the feminist movement of the 1920s and 1930s. Her work, including poetry and novels, dealt with feminist issues. Her novels include ''El dolor de vivir'' (1932) and ''Cuando libertan los esclavos'' (1936). Biography Born in Camagüey, Soravilla worked as a journalist for ''El Mundo''. As an activist, Soravilla participated in the founding of several organizations for the rights of women such as the Club Femenino de Cuba (Women's Club of Cuba) and the Unión Nacional de Mujeres (National Union of Women), along with other writers such as Ofelia Rodríguez Acosta, Berta Arocena de Martínez Márquez, Julieta Carreta and Tete Casuso. Camagüey
Camagüey () is a city and municipality in central Cuba and is the nation's third-largest city with more than 321,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Camagüey Province. It was founded as Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe in 1514, by Spanish colonists on the northern coast and moved inland in 1528, to the site of a Taino village named Camagüey. It was one of the seven original settlements (''villas'') founded in Cuba by the Spanish. After Henry Morgan burned the city in the 17th century, it was redesigned like a maze so attackers would find it hard to move around inside the city. The symbol of the city of Camagüey is the clayen pot or ''tinajón'', used to capture rain water and keep it fresh. Camagüey is also the birthplace of Ignacio Agramonte (1841), an important figure of the Ten Years' War against Spain. Mariblanca Sabas Alomá
Mariblanca Sabas Alomá (February 10, 1901 – July 19, 1983) was a Cuban feminist, journalist and poet. A political activist, she was also a Minister without portfolio in the Cuban government under Ramón Grau and Carlos Prio. Her writing was devoted to the cause of women's rights, particularly the right to vote. Biography She was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1901. Her parents were Francisco Sabas Castillo and Belén Alomá Ciarlos. She studied at University of Havana, Columbia University and University of Puerto Rico. A founding member of the Grupo Minorista, she also served as president of the Partido Democrata Sufragista, and editor of ''La Mujer''. She wrote columns in the leftist periodicals, ''Social'' and ''Carteles''. For ''Carteles'', she wrote a series of homophobic articles in 1928 on female homosexuality, identifying lesbianism as a social disease.
