Les Welch
Lesley "Les" Welch (6 August 1925 – 1 September 2014) was an Australian musician, popular in the 1950s. Career Lesley Welch was born in England in Newcastle-on-Tyne, but his family moved to Australia when he was young, and settled in Gladesville, New South Wales. After teaching himself piano, Welch began playing blues in parties and at nightclubs during the 1940s. He toured nationally, performing jazz and appearing on radio, and in 1948 he was voted King of Swing at a Sydney Town Hall concert. He signed a lifetime contract with the Australian Record Company (ARC) in 1949, and by 1952 had already recorded over 200 songs for them. He left ARC to set up rival Festival Records that year, and worked as A&R. In 1953 his album ''Tempos de Barrelhouse'', was released by Festival as one of the first records by an Australian artist pressed at 33 RPM. CBS Records International was the international arm of the Columbia Records unit of Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. (CBS) formed in 1961 and launched in 1962. Previously, Columbia Records had licensed other record companies to manufacture and distribute Columbia recordings outside North America (excluding Canada by 1976), such as Philips Records and its subsidiary Fontana (now part of the Universal Music Group) in Europe. Festival Records (later known as Festival Mushroom Records) was an Australian recording and publishing company founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1952 and operated until 2005. Festival was a wholly owned subsidiary of News Limited from 1961 to 2005, and the company was successful for most of its 50-year life, despite the fact that as much as 90% of its annual profit was regularly siphoned off by Rupert Murdoch to subsidise his other media ventures. Artists and repertoire (colloquially abbreviated to A&R) is the division of a record label or music publishing company that is responsible for talent scouting and overseeing the artistic development of recording artists (singers, instrumentalists, bands, and so on) and songwriters. It also acts as a liaison between artists and the record label or publishing company; every activity involving artists to the point of album release is generally considered under the purview, and responsibility, of A&R. The LP (from "long playing" or "long play") is an analog sound storage medium, a phonograph record format characterized by: a speed of rpm; a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter; use of the "microgroove" groove specification; and a vinyl (a copolymer of vinyl chloride acetate) composition disk. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. Apart from a few relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound, it remained the standard format for record albums (during a period in popular music known as the album era) until its gradual replacement from the 1980s to the early 2000s, first by cassettes, then by compact discs, and finally by digital music distribution. Reginald Roy Grundy (4 August 1923 – 6 May 2016) was an Australian entrepreneur and media mogul, best known for his numerous television productions. He was the producer of various Australian game shows, such as '' Blankety Blanks'' (based on a Mark Goodson–Bill Todman production, ''Match Game'') and ''Wheel of Fortune'' (based on the US Merv Griffin production of the same name) before later diversifying into soap operas and serials including ''Prisoner'', ''The Young Doctors'', '' Sons and Daughters'' and ''Neighbours'', the last of which was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame in 2005.
