Les Voix Baroques is a Canadian vocal ensemble specializing in early music. The ensemble was founded in 1999 by Matthew White (countertenor), Chloe Meyers (violinist) and Amanda Keesmaat (harpsichordist). Matthew White (countertenor)
Matthew White (born 1973) is a Canadian countertenor. Career Born in Ottawa, Ontario, White began singing as a treble with St Matthew's Men and Boys Choir in Ottawa and studied with Jan Simons in Montreal, Quebec. He graduated in English Literature from McGill University. He and four other musicians created the ensemble Les Voix Baroques in 1999, specialising in Baroque and Renaissance material. He has sung with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Cleveland Opera, and Opera Atelier. On June 9, 2003, White sang the roles of Evanthes and Bacchus in the first performance in modern times of Johann Georg Conradi's 1691 opera ''Ariadne'' at the Boston Early Music Festival. The studio recording with the same cast received a Grammy nomination for Best Opera Recording of 2005. Carissimi
(Gian) Giacomo Carissimi (; baptized 18 April 160512 January 1674) was an Italian composer and music teacher. He is one of the most celebrated masters of the early Baroque or, more accurately, the Roman School of music. Carissimi established the characteristic features of the Latin oratorio and was a prolific composer of masses, motets and cantatas. He was highly influential in musical developments in north European countries through his pupils, like Kerll in Germany and Charpentier in France, and the wide dissemination of his music.Andrew V. Johannes-Passion
The ''Passio secundum Joannem'' or ''St John Passion'' (german: Johannes-Passion, link=no), BWV 245, is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, the older of the surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during his first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7, 1724, at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church. The structure of the work falls in two halves, intended to flank a sermon. The anonymous libretto draws on existing works (notably by Barthold Heinrich Brockes) and is compiled from recitatives and choruses narrating the Passion of Christ as told in the Gospel of John, ariosos and arias reflecting on the action, and chorales using hymn tunes and texts familiar to a congregation of Bach's contemporaries. Compared with the ''St Matthew Passion'', the ''St John Passion'' has been described as more extravagant, with an expressive immediacy, at times more unbridled and less "finished". Alexander Weimann
Alexander Weimann (born 1965, in Munich) is a German conductor and harpsichordist. Weimann studied in Munich and then was a teacher at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, Münchner Musikhochschule 1990–1995. He is a regular conductor of Les Voix Baroques and the Arion Ensemble.
