Lester Leroy Caywood (August 18, 1903 – February 4, 1986) was an American football player from Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Caywood played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) as a guard and tackle. Career Caywood made his National Football League debut with the Buffalo Rangers in 1926. Over the next nine season he played for the Cleveland Bulldogs, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Gunners, Detroit Wolverines, Brooklyn Dodgers, Pottsville Maroons, Chicago Cardinals and the New York Giants The New York Giants are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. Sapulpa, Oklahoma
Sapulpa is a city in Creek and Tulsa counties in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 20,544 at the 2010 United States census, compared to 19,166 at the 2000 census. The population as of 2022 is 22,205. As of 2019, the estimated population was 21,278. It is the county seat of Creek County. History Early history The town was named after the area's first permanent settler, a full-blood Lower Creek Indian named ''Sapulpa,'' from the Kasihta or Cusseta band, from Osocheetown in Alabama. About 1850, he established a trading post near the meeting of Polecat and Rock creeks (about one mile (1.6 km) southeast of downtown Sapulpa). When the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (which became the Frisco) built a spur to this area in 1886, it was known as Sapulpa Station. 1927 NFL Season
The 1927 NFL season was the eighth regular season of the National Football League. Prior to the season, the league decided to eliminate the financially weaker teams. As a result, the league dropped from 22 to 12 teams. The league absorbed many players and one franchise (the New York Yankees) from the defunct American Football League. Wilfrid Smith in the ''Chicago Tribune'' wrote that "the reduction formed a more compact circuit and provided better competition." Smith opined that the "outstanding feature" of the 1927 NFL season was the debut of Benny Friedman who became one of the game's "best drawing cards" and proved that professional football could support itself in Cleveland. Although five black players participated in the 1926 season (including future Hall of Famer Fritz Pollard), none played during the 1927 season. The Detroit Wolverines were a 19th-century Major League Baseball team that played in the National League from 1881 to 1888 in the city of Detroit, Michigan. In total, they won 426 games and lost 437, taking their lone pennant (and winning the pre-modern World Series) in 1887. The team was disbanded following the 1888 season.
