Les Archer Jr.
Leslie Archer best known as Les Archer Jr. (27 February 1929 – 18 December 2019) was an English former leading motorcycle racer of the 1950s, competing in long-distance speed trials, road racing and scrambles, now known as motocross. He was the son of Les Archer, also a top motorcycle racer from the 1920s. Archer is notable for winning the 1956 F.I.M. 500cc European Motocross Championship on a highly modified Manx Norton. Biography Archer rode for the New Imperial factory at the 1947 Isle of Man TT, and competed in the 1950 International Six Days Trial as a member of the British Army team. He competed alongside his traveling companion Eric Cheney, who went on to become one of the top British motorcycle designers. Archer was also a member of the victorious British teams at the 1952 and 1953 Motocross des Nations events. 1947 Isle Of Man TT
The 1947 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy was the first race festival since 1939 due to the interruption of World War II. With the restart of racing, the ACU decided to add three Clubman-class races for production machines in Lightweight, Junior and Senior categories, making the festival a six-race event. It held in 9-13 June. Harold Daniell won the Senior TT at on a Norton and the Norton team were to dominate the Senior race until 1954. Speeds were somewhat lower than the pre-war races due to the low quality "pool" petrol available, and it would be another three years before Daniell's 1938 lap record was broken. Superchargers were banned for motorcycle racing from 1946, so that may have reduced speed too. Enduro Riders
Enduro is a form of motorcycle sport run on extended cross-country, off-road courses. Enduro consists of many different obstacles and challenges. The main type of enduro event, and the format to which the World Enduro Championship is run, is a time-card enduro, whereby a number of stages are raced in a time trial against the clock. Time-keeping enduros In a traditional time-keeping enduro, riders leave together in groups or rows, and each row starts at a certain minute. The object of the event is to arrive at pre-defined checkpoints according to a strict schedule. Early or late arrivals result in the riders' scores being penalized. Throughout a day there will also be allocated periods for refuelling and servicing the machine. The Motor Cycle
''The Motor Cycle'' was one of the first British magazines about motorcycles. Launched by Iliffe and Sons Ltd in 1903, its blue cover led to it being called "The Blue 'un" to help distinguish it from its rival publication ''Motor Cycling (magazine), Motor Cycling'', which, using a green background colour, was known as "The Green 'un". Many issues carried the strapline "Circulated throughout the World". The covers eventually used a variety of different background colours after 1962, with a name-change to ''Motor Cycle''. Features Noted for detailed road tests of contemporary motorcycles and articles on readers' bikes, the magazine had regular features, including "Current Chat" and "Letters to the Editor" where many of the key issues relating to British motorcycling of the day were debated. John Draper (motorcyclist)
John Draper (1929 – 24 December 2002) was an English professional motorcycle racer. He was a versatile rider competing in many diverse motorcycle competitions, most notably motocross in which he became the first British rider to win the European Motocross Championship in 1955. Draper also competed in trials, enduro and road racing competitions. He was a member of four victorious British Motocross des Nations teams in 1950, 1953, 1956 and 1959. __TOC__ Motorcycling career Born in Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire, England, Draper first learned to ride motorcycles on his father's farm.
