Leones De Ponce (basketball)
Leones de Ponce is a professional basketball team in Ponce, Puerto Rico. They are a member of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league (BSN). The team was established in 1946 and has become one of the most successful clubs in league history, winning a record fourteen championships (a number also matched by the Atléticos de San Germán and just one championship behind the Vaqueros de Bayamón), the most recent being the 2015 championship acquired after defeating the Capitanes de Arecibo in the finals. History The 50s and 60s The Leones successes have always been periodical: their first championship came in 1952, 22 years after the beginning of BSN tournaments. Baloncesto Superior Nacional
The Baloncesto Superior Nacional, abbreviated as BSN, is the first-tier-level professional men's basketball list of basketball leagues, league in Puerto Rico. It was founded in 1929 and is organized by the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation. The Baloncesto Superior Nacional, which is played under FIBA rules of basketball, rules, currently consists of 12 teams, of which the most successful has been the Vaqueros de Bayamón with 16 titles as of 2022. Red Holzman
William "Red" Holzman (August 10, 1920 – November 13, 1998) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He is best known as the head coach of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1967 to 1977, and again from 1978 to 1982. Holzman helped lead the Knicks to two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1996, Holzman was named one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History. Arecibo Captains
The Capitanes de Arecibo are a Puerto Rican professional basketball team based in Arecibo that competes in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) league. In 2010, the team also had the distinction to play in the Premier Basketball League (PBL) under the name Capitanes de Puerto Rico. The team began play in the league in 1946. Home games are held at Manuel Iguina Coliseum, which the team shares with the Capitanes de Arecibo men's volleyball team. Guaynabo (, ) is a city, suburb of San Juan and municipality in the northern part of Puerto Rico, located in the northern coast of the island, north of Aguas Buenas, south of Cataño, east of Bayamón, and west of San Juan. Bobby Ríos
Roberto "Bobby" Ríos Osorio (born August 14, 1957) is a retired Puerto Rican basketball player. Ríos played as a point guard and shooting guard for five different teams during his career, and won three championships. He is currently 5th in assists and 7th in scoring of all-time in the league. Career Ríos was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico on August 14, 1957. He debuted with the Vaqueros de Bayamón in 1978. In 1981, Ríos was traded to the Leones de Ponce where he became the starting point guard. He ended up averaging 17.7 points per game in his first season and remained a consistent scorer during this first stint with the team. Mets De Guaynabo (basketball)
Mets de Guaynabo is a Puerto Rican professional basketball team of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional based in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The team dissolved in 2015, but was reinstated with new ownership in 2019. The team was founded in 1935 as the original Cangrejeros de Santurce based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, one of the first professional clubs in the San Juan Metropolitan Area. In 1976 the franchise relocated to the city of Guaynabo and was renamed as the Mets de Guaynabo. Since 1983 the team's home court is Mario Morales Coliseum, named after famed basketball player Mario Morales, who led the team to its three titles in the 1980s. Mario Morales
Mario Morales Micheo (born November 13, 1957) is a former Puerto Rican basketball player. He is known as a.k.a. "Quijote" Morales for his ability to conquer both scoring and team championships in Puerto Rico's BSN league. He is the father of Evansville Purple Aces women's volleyball coach Fernando Morales Lopez. Javier Antonio Colón
Javier Antonio "Toñito" Colón (born June 4, 1969) is a retired Puerto Rican basketball player. Colón spent his entire career as a point guard for the Leones de Ponce of the BSN from 1987 to 2008. Colón led the team to five championships during his career, and is currently third on assists of all-time in the league. Colón also played for the Puerto Rico National Basketball Team from 1990 to 1999. Career Colón was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on June 4, 1969.
