Leonardo Balada
Leonardo Balada Ibáñez (born September 22, 1933) is a Catalan American classical composer, who is noted for his operas and orchestral works. Life Balada was born in Barcelona, Spain. After studying piano at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, Balada emigrated to the United States in 1956 to study at the New York College of Music on scholarship. Catalan Americans ( ca, Català americà) are Americans of Catalan descent. The group is formed by Catalan-born naturalized citizens or residents, their descendants and, to a lesser extent, citizens or residents of Catalan descent who still acknowledge Catalan ancestry. The Catalan or Catalonian ancestry is identified with the code 204 in the 2000 U.S. Census, with the name ''Catalonian'', which is in the group 200-299 Hispanic categories (including Spain). A total of 1,738 individuals who received the long-form Census questionnaire (which is given to 1 in 6 households) self-identified as Catalan Americans. In the same survey 1,660 people aged 5 or older indicated being able to speak the Catalan language, also with the name ''Catalonian''. Because the long-form samples a sixth of the population, that figure puts the estimate of Catalan speakers in the US in 2000 at around 10,000 people. ''Images pour orchestre'', L. 122, is an orchestral composition in three sections by Claude Debussy, written between 1905 and 1912. Debussy had originally intended this set of ''Images'' as a two-piano sequel to the first set of ''Images'' for solo piano, as described in a letter to his publisher Durand as of September 1905. However, by March 1906, in another letter to Durand, he had begun to think of arranging the work for orchestra rather than two pianos. ''No-res, a Symphonic Tragedy in Two Parts'' (Catalan language, Catalan: Nothing, una tragèdia simfònica en dues parts), also known as ''No-res, an Agnostic Requiem'' (Catalan: ''Nothing, un rèquiem agnòstic'') is a cantata for choir, orchestra, narrator and magnetic tape by Barcelonan composer Leonardo Balada. This work was finished on 1974 and represents a soundscape in which the composer recreates the relationship between himself and his mother when the latter was dying, to whom the work is dedicated. The lyrics were written exclusively for this composition by French poet Jean Paris. This is one of the most relevant works from the avant-garde period of Balada. This work was premiered on 1997 in Barcelona by the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra, together with the Coro Nacional de España, and conducted by Lawrence Foster. Double Concerto (Balada)
The ''Double Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet and Orchestra'' is a concerto for two soloists by Spanish composer Leonardo Balada. It was finished in 2010 Composition Balada's compositional career took place mostly in the United States of America, as he has been teaching at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he is University Professor of Composition. As a result of this, he has dedicated some of his compositional endeavors to American countries, such as his first symphony. The Double Concerto was finished in 2010, and it features the composer's most recognizable trait: a fluctuation between his avant-garde style and folk music. In this case, he uses two very well known Mexican folk melodies. The concerto was commissioned by Rudy Weingartner and is dedicated to him, to Eleanor Weingartner, a clarinetist, and Miguel Salazar, an oboist.
