Leonard Wolf
Leonard Wolf (March 1, 1923 – March 20, 2019) was a Romanian-American poet, author, teacher, and translator. He is known for his authoritative annotated editions of classic gothic horror novels, including ''Dracula'', ''Frankenstein'', ''The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'', and ''The Phantom of the Opera'', and other critical works on the topic; and also for his Yiddish translations of works ranging from those of Isaac Bashevis Singer to ''Winnie-the-Pooh''. He was the father of Naomi Wolf. Life and career Born in Vulcan, Romania (Transylvania), Wolf was originally named 'Ludovic', which was changed upon his arrival in the United States in 1930 with his mother, Rose-ita, older brother, Maxim (Mel) and younger sister, Shirly. He wrote and published numerous poems, short stories, book reviews and articles, and was part of the Berkeley Renaissance of the late 1940s and 1950s. The Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc. is a free health care service provider serving more than 34,000 people in Northern California. Overview The organization was founded by Dr. David E. Smith in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, California on June 7, 1967, during the counterculture of the 1960s. As thousands of youth arrived in the city, many were in need of substance abuse treatment, mental health service, and medical attention. The clinic became the model for the modern form of the free clinic. Haight Ashbury Switchboard
During the "hippie" period 1967–1968 in San Francisco, an individual named Al Rinker started an organization located at 1830 Fell St in the city's Haight Ashbury district called the Switchboard. Its purpose was to act as a social switchboard for people living there. History In early 1967 the Diggers were promoting a new type of philosophy and life concept in the Haight Ashbury. With the increase in media coverage of the district, a local resident Al Rinker was able to see the need for a service that would provide news and information about the hippie movement in the area. At the beginning of 1967, he rented an apartment on 1830 Fell Street just across the street from Golden Gate Park's Panhandle in order to function as both his home and the headquarters of his conceptual "Switchboard" concept. Haight Ashbury
Haight-Ashbury () is a district of San Francisco, California, named for the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets. It is also called The Haight and The Upper Haight. The neighborhood is known as one of the main centers of the counterculture of the 1960s. Location The district generally encompasses the neighborhood surrounding Haight Street, bounded by Stanyan Street and Golden Gate Park on the west, Oak Street and the Golden Gate Park Panhandle on the north, Baker Street and Buena Vista Park to the east and Frederick Street and Ashbury Heights and Cole Valley neighborhoods to the south. The street names commemorate two early San Francisco leaders: pioneer and exchange banker Henry Haight, and Munroe Ashbury, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1864 to 1870.
