Leonard Sillman
Leonard Sillman (May 9, 1908 - January 23, 1982) was an American Broadway producer. Born in Detroit, Michigan on May 9, 1908, he was the brother of June Carroll, the brother-in-law of Sidney Carroll and the uncle of Steve Reich and Jonathan Carroll. He produced a series of musical revues, ''Leonard Sillman's New Faces'', which introduced many major stars to Broadway audiences, such as Henry Fonda, Eartha Kitt, Imogene Coca, Inga Swenson, John Lund, Van Johnson, Carol Lawrence, Madeline Kahn, Paul Lynde and Maggie Smith. Versions of ''New Faces'' were produced in 1934, 1936 (made into the film ''New Faces of 1937''), 1943, 1952 (made into the film ''New Faces''), 1956, 1962 and 1968. The very first ''New Faces'' in 1934 included actors Henry Fonda, Imogene Coca and Frances Dewey Wormser. Frances Dewey Wormser (June 23, 1903 – January 28, 2008) was an American stage actress, entertainer and vaudeville performer. Personal life Frances Dewey was born in New York City on June 23, 1903, the daughter of Alfred James Dewey (1874–1958), a California artist who was considered the "dean" of an early art colony in Sierra Madre, California. She later took up painting herself. Dewey married her first husband, Orin Zoline, in the later 1930s, approximately the same time that she retired from entertaining. Zoline died in the 1950s. ''New Faces'' is a 1954 American film adaptation of the musical revue ''New Faces of 1952'' directed by Harry Horner with sketches directed by John Beal. Filmed in Cinemascope and Eastmancolor it was released by 20th Century Fox on March 6, 1954. The film is sometimes referred to as ''New Faces of 1952'', from the original Broadway show's title. Plot summary The film was essentially a reproduction of the stage revue with a thin plot added. This involved a producer and performer (Ronny Graham) in financial trouble on opening night. ''New Faces of 1952'' is a musical revue with songs and comedy skits. It ran on Broadway for nearly a year in 1952 and was then made into a motion picture in 1954. It helped launch the careers of several young performers including Paul Lynde, Alice Ghostley, Eartha Kitt, Robert Clary, Carol Lawrence, Ronny Graham, performer/writer Mel Brooks (as Melvin Brooks), and lyricist Sheldon Harnick. Broadway production The revue opened on Broadway at the Royale Theatre on May 16, 1952, and ran for 365 performances.
