Leonard Norman
Leonard Norman (1947 – 1 June 2021) was a Jersey politician, and Connétable of Saint Clement. He was originally elected to the States of Jersey in 1983, as a Deputy. Biography Len Norman was born in 1947 in Jersey. He was educated at Beaulieu and then at De La Salle College, Jersey. He was the President of the Jersey Sports Council, President of the Jersey Friends of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust and Patron of St Clement Sports Club. Political career He was first elected to the States of Jersey as Deputy of Saint Clement in 1983. In the Senatorial election of 1996 he was elected in 3rd place with 11,017 votes. In the States, he has been President of the Education Committee, Vice-president of the Harbours and Airport Committee, and Vice-President of the Special Committee on the Composition and Election of the States. Connétable (Jersey And Guernsey)
Connétables in Jersey and Guernsey are the elected heads of the parishes. They are often called 'constables' in English. The constables are entitled each to carry a silver-tipped baton of office. Jersey In Jersey, each parish elects a constable for a three-year mandate (four years until 2008) to run the parish and also represent the parish in the legislature, the States Assembly. There are 12 Connétables one for each of the ancient Parishes. They are members of the States Assembly along with this political role they hold power of a police officer as part of Honorary Police system of Jersey. 2008 Jersey General Election
The Jersey general election, 2008 was a series of elections that were taking place in two stages in October and November 2008 in Jersey. Constable elections For the first time since 1948 the elections of constables for the twelve parishes of Jersey have been synchronised so that polling, where necessary, will take place on the same day as the senatorial election on 15 October 2008, in accordance with the Connétables (Jersey) Law 2008 (registered 28 March 2008). At Assemblies of Electors held in nine parishes on 17 September 2008, constables in five parishes were returned unopposed: St Brelade, St Martin, St Ouen, Trinity and St Saviour. The constables of the other parishes declined to stand down to recontest their seats, preferring to serve out their full term so that the provisions of the law will apply to the next mandate from 2011. St Clement (Jèrriais: ''Saint Cliément'') is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Its parish hall is around south-east of St Helier. The parish has a population of 9,221 and is the second most densely populated. Located on the south-east coast of the island, stretching from Le Dicq in the west to near La Rocque in the east, it is the smallest parish, with a surface area of just 2,440 vergées (4 km2). The parish is largely suburbanised, with a large spread of post-war low-density housing development. There is no easily definable centre to the parish.
